The goal of the project was to use community gravel beds as an inexpensive method to build tree canopy as a way to positively impact stormwater quality of the Great Lakes. I have several primary duties, the first of which was to collaborate with foresters and natural resource professionals at the City of Racine WI and Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and determine the condition of their programs (in relation to the GLRI project) and assess what resources were needed (financial, technical experience, materials, etc.). I also developed tree growth monitoring protocols for both communities to track project progress. Additionally, I worked with several metro communities to collect data on young tree growth and planting variables. I was also charged with scheduling and leading site visits, volunteer training sessions, tree planting events, and informational meetings. Using the data I gathered during this project, I was able to design a thesis project that examined several variables (tree species, planting entity, planting location, and root stock type) and sought to determine which most impacted young tree survival. This research is ongoing. Another one of my projects at the University of Minnesota is to maintain the UFORE research nursery which consists of tree removals, young tree pruning, formational pruning, development of educational materials, nursery maintenance, tree and shrub planting, exotic tree pruning methods and teaching tree planting classes (Tree planting BMPS, aggressive and invasive terrestrial species, and tree inspector). I was also a part of the technical climb staff for the Youth Engagement in Arboriculture (YEA) summer camps sponsored by the University of Minnesota. Show less

At MPC, I worked on leading habitat restoration activities in prairie, forest, and savannah ecosystems. One of my primary projects while working at MPC was creating GIS maps and conducting health assessments of native plant communities within the MNRRA, so I have experience in both native plant community identification and GIS software. Given that MNRRA is a partnership park (the National Park Service owns little of the land that makes up the park) we constantly worked with our partners at federal, state, county, municipal, non-profit, and watershed levels to accomplish projects and enact programs. This experience of working with many different kinds of agencies and people made me particularly skilled in presenting technical information to diverse technical and non-technical audiences. Assisted foremen with diverse types of tree removals and pruning and collaborated with colleagues to develop both short and long term tree healthcare plans. I have experience in pruning various types of trees found throughout the metro area. I have successfully and safely worked as a member of a team to perform small to very large tree removals and rigging operations, as well as felling, pruning, and climbing. Climbed as part of a team or individually to evaluate and adapt to changing conditions on removal and pruning operations. I have received training in aerial rescue operations, and as a result, I have a good working knowledge of running ropes, operating forwarding equipment, and climbing during removal and pruning operations. Other parts of this job include removal and treatment of invasive species (Buckthorn), communication with clam truck loaders, operation of forwarding equipment, use of brush chippers, as well as keeping equipment and vehicles well maintained. Everyday use of various types of equipment (loaders, chainsaws, etc.) was also a key element of this position. This position also had me spending long hours lifting heavy weights and preforming other physically arduous tasks. Consulted with clients and the general public in order to achieve a wide range of needs and services, as well as answering questions about work being performed, information on trees, procedures and safety practices.
