I started my career in the nuclear power industry as a young engineer. After our plant, Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, experienced an accident similar to the Three Mile Island event, but not as severe because several operators literally saved the day, I started to learn first-hand about the importance of process safety. Selected by Admiral Joe Williams to lead our configuration management program (process safety management in the oil and chemical business), I ran this program successfully as part of our 1-1/2 year plant restart effort. The work I led was held up by the NRC at the time as the way to implement a process safety program.I used this opportunity as jumping off point for starting a consulting business, with my wife, based on this initial work in the nuclear industry. I soon learned of the strong correlation between configuration management in the nuclear industry and process safety in the oil and chemical industries. Through some great relationships we were able to continue to grow and help many clients in all three industries. This work then led me to join BP to help strengthen their Safety & Operational Risk audit team from within.
