Founder And CeoFsa 1989 - 1996Freedman started FSA while still an undergraduate, and developed and sold networking and security software for 7 years (the first 3 of which were also spent completing bachelor's and master's degrees in CompSci). The company was an architype for bootstrapped software startups. Freedman grew FSA from zero to a multi-million dollar profitable corporation without taking funds from angel or institutional investors. FSA was self-funding (initially out of consulting revenues, then later out of product revenues and product line sales). It had a phenomenal staff who were unafraid to do impossible things very quickly. In a city of relatively boring project work, FSA stood out as an interesting place to work. When the company was ultimately acquired by McAfee in 1996, every single employee did very well out of the transaction, which was the first of its kind in Calgary. Several employees went on to work with Freedman at subsequent companies.
