I am a sociologist with research interests are in gender and work, particularly in sex-segregated organizations and occupations. My first book, At Work in the Iron Cage, focused on gender and work in prisons. More recently, I have been interested in research and the application of research to promote gender equity in higher education. I have been involved in various capacities with the National Science Foundation's ADVANCE program for gender equity in STEM higher education since 2008. I have also served as a consultant on issues of gender and leadership and equity in higher education. I have held a number of leadership and administrative positions: I was editor-in-chief of the journal Gender & Society from 2006-1011 and Faculty Director of the Rutgers Center for Women and Work from 2012-2015. I am co-director, on behalf of the faculty union, of the Rutgers Faculty Salary Equity program. I also chair the Department of Labor Studies and Employment Relations.
