WHO IS DANA CRAMER?I am a PhD Candidate in the joint Communication & Culture program offered collaboratively by Toronto Metropolitan and York Universities. I currently work as a CIGI Digital Policy Hub Fellow (Doctoral) at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), a think tank based out of Waterloo. In my academic and think tank work, I focus on emerging technologies and how they disrupt Internet governance spaces, thereby shifting the evolution of the Internet.CANADA’S TOP YOUNG INTERNET LEADEROver the past several years I have become Canada’s top young Internet leader. I am the President of the Youth Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Canada, Canada’s leading youth not-for-profit designed to develop the next generation of Canadian Internet leaders. I am an Internet Society Global Youth Ambassador, becoming one of a handful of Canadians to ever hold this position. As well, I sit on the All-Hands Committee of the Canadian IGF.I have participated in Internet governance fellowships, including an ARIN52 Fellowship with the American Registry for Internet Number (ARIN) and NextGen@ICANN79 placement and ICANN81 Fellowship with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).I have developed expertise in Internet governance throughout my degrees. My master’s thesis focused on the political economy of Internet protocols, analyzing the history of multiple internets to contextualize China/Huawei’s New Internet Protocol (New IP) submission to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). My undergraduate honours thesis focused on Alberta’s urban-rural digital divide. An article stemming from this went onto win the 2020 Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) Prize for Excellence in Policy Research. When I won, I was the youngest person to win in its history.GOVERNMENT, PRIVATE SECTOR & NON-PROFITAfter I won the CRTC Prize, I went onto work in the CRTC’s Strategic Policy and International Affairs team for just under three years. I have volunteered as a digital literacy instructor in programs aimed to strengthen Canadians' and newcomers' technology skills. As well, I have worked in both private and non-profit sectors in internal communications and marketing.TO SUMMARIZEI strive to specialize my career, academic work, and volunteerism within communities of inquiry and the success of users of ICTs to uplift the Canadian economy. I am passionate about technology policy, research, international affairs, and citizen empowerment.

For Youth IGF Canada during this fellowship, I also established connections with the United Nations, International Telecommunication Union, and Canadian Internet Governance Forum for Canadian youth participation at these organizations’ events/conferences. Qualitatively coded these notes using NVivo and drafted a summary sheet of the key themes in Microsoft Excel. Was recognized as a co-author of the white paper, also developing its graphic design using Adobe InDesign. Research Assistant - Graduate Student Academic PublishingUniversity Of Calgary Jun 2020 - Aug 2021Calgary, Alberta, CanadaDeveloped and implemented a methodological framework for gathering qualitative focus group data pertaining to how graduate students learn how to publish their academic work. Gathered contact information of graduate student organizations across campus for recruiting students to the focus groups. Co-ran the virtual focus groups as the technical support (using Zoom) of three student focus groups and three faculty focus groups. Cleaned up AI-generated transcripts of the focus groups (using Rev Transcription Services) and qualitatively coded these transcripts using NVivo. Became a co-author for the article writing the methodology section and aided in revising conference applications of the talking paper. Conducted interviews with key stakeholders in Calgary's (Canada) fibre broadband network, gathered case studies comparing Canadian cities' broadband resiliency during the pandemic, and coded interview transcripts for key themes using NVivo. Became a co-author on the peer reviewed article stemming from this research which was published in the Journal of Digital Media and Policy. -
