A radar or optical device can be way off in alignment and it will still be able to successfully track a target.Having been a forward observer at Yuma Proving Grounds, I have a special appreciation for troops on the ground requesting Fire Support while under fire themselves. It is like giving a ship's Weapon System a sniper's sighting in. One shot, one target down; but now in 3D parallel on a multitude of targets.Responsible for Alignment & Alignment Verification of weapon systems on AEGIS & LCS platforms. Systems included AN/SPY-1, MK 82 FCS, 5" Gun, Bofors, Phalanx CIWS, GoalKeeper CIWS, multiple Optical Sight Systems, AN/SLQ-32 and Sonar.Worked on US, Japan, Spain, Norway, Republic of Korea, and Australia AEGIS Baselines and ships and land facilities (including AEGIS Ashore). My team provides on-ship/site technical services to assist in performing non-destructive Alignment Verification testing against live air or surface targets. If this testing identifies an issue, the team participates in performing diagnostics to resolve the issue. Commonly the issues can be physical alignment or internal Combat System related. My team is therefore a multidisciplinary one, experienced in the details of the integrated Combat System, including the computer programs and a 30+ year corporate history of causes and effects. This successful testing expertise has been extended to LCS and HCM (Canada).I and my team also collaborate with construction shipyards and the Surface Combatant Alignment ISEA (NSWC PHD) in developing and maintaining alignment procedures. We have collaboratively gone through a significant technology and process upgrade starting from 2008 through 2014 with oversight from PEO IWS 1SI4, but there are still going to be ongoing efforts at continuous improvements, as technology also marches on. -
