Design Studio - Tigerpaw Software + AlexaJeffrey Raikes School of Computer Science and ManagementAdded voice enablement through Amazon Alexa to the existing Tigerpaw software, allowing users to query Alexa for real-time information about their business and take basic actions on that information.Worked extensively with Amazon Web Services (AWS), the Alexa Developer Console, and Node.js. Participated in frequent collaboration and communication with faculty, sponsors, and team members to develop a working product and meet project goals and expectations.

The vision of this research project is to improve student learning of Computational Thinking and problem solving. Our aim is to develop a suite of learning modules that incorporate creative coding, with premise that the integration of creative activities will make the modules engaging and motivating. In terms of broader impact, the project will contribute to building a bridge between traditionally disjunct disciplines and leverage the resulting connection to create effective learning outcomes and foster innovation.This study will explore the educational outcomes of creative coding and its potential for integrating concepts from Computer Science and Art/Design. The educational program developed will focus on using visual learning to connect the complex syntax of the code itself to the task it is accomplishes in order to make understanding code more intuitive and less intimidating. The ability to interact with a program can potentially increase interest and engagement.Becoming skilled in the Processing language puts a powerful tool for expression in the hands of people who might otherwise be too intimidated or confused. The expressive potential is only limited by familiarity with the language and imagination.If the integration of the fundamentals of creative thinking and computational thinking through creative coding can be shown to significantly increase educational outcomes in both Art and Computer Science, it can open the door for further interdisciplinary education. The significance of this research can thus be multi-faceted and far reaching.Can the fundamentals of Computer Science and Art/Design be synthesized into an interdisciplinary educational program? Does programming within a visual/interactive context significantly increase Computational Thinking aptitude?

One of four UNL undergraduates chosen for the inaugural class of Innovation Fellows. The fellowship is a result of a partnership between Innovation Studio and Beyond School Bells with the goal of impacting children across the state by working on a design team with leading educational professionals. We are focused on developing Think, Make, Create Labs – mobile trailers used for expanded learning opportunities – that encourage problem-solving, creativity and exploration in a hands-on learning environment as well as designing after school curriculum that encourages the development of STEM skills.
