FounderThe Black Doll Affair Dec 2007 - PresentUnited StatesIn 2005, unable to find a modeling agent, I bought this 32 x 52 billboard on Broadway in Times Square. My self created campaign: 'Got Spokesmodel?' was intended to get me an agent and move the diversity & inclusion bar. I hoped companies like Godiva would see my chocolate skin and include me and women like me, in their marketing ads. It didn't work. At least not in the way I intended.2006, recovering from that "failed" campaign, out of a job, I was home watching Oprah. The show topic: Skewed Self Image. One of Oprah's guest was teen filmmaker Kiri Davis. Her documentary, "A Girl Like Me" received Oprah's attention. In her documentary Kiri spoke to her friends about growing up black girl. With daycare children in NY, she recreated Dr. Kenneth & Mamie Clark’s 1940s "doll experiment". As I watched the teens talk about being rejected by society and by some in their family because of their hue, when the black children chose the white doll as the pretty and good doll and the black doll as the ugly and bad doll, I realized the reason I was able to hang out on the busiest street in the world for 3-months and not have one company call and offer me a role in their marketing campaigns, was because I AM the BLACK DOLL. In that moment, I understood why I was born with dark skin. I understood why, even though I am beautiful, I couldn't get a modeling agent. In that moment of watching Black women and girls reject themselves and internalize racism, I understood my God-given gift of marketing & broadcasting. I am here to change the way black girls are perceived and perceive themselves. In 2007, I founded The Black Doll Affair and went on to partner it with Macy's & Mattel. The Black Dolls have been seen in fashion mags such as O, Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Essence. BDA was awarded Pres. Obama's Service Award and Congressman John Lewis' Congressional Recognition. Gov. Sonny Perdue proclaimed Dec. 12th as The Black Doll Affair Day in Georgia. We are The Black Dolls!
