Facing History and Ourselves is an international organization providing curriculum and professional development to foster empathy in students and create a more informed and participatory democracy. I have worked with Facing History in a variety of ways over the years ranging from facilitating professional development, providing individual teacher coaching, contributing to social media presence via blogs and Twitter, and creating original curriculum. A grant from the Literacy Design Collaborative (LDC) fueled my initial hiring and I worked in tandem with full-time Facing History staff to create innovative content for the LDC site. My work was given the rating of "exemplary" by their independent jurying process, the highest possible rating. In addition, I was asked to present my curriculum at the Accelerating the Common Core summit at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. I continue to serve on the Teacher Leadership Team providing feedback and insight as needed. My role with Facing History shifts based on the needs of the local office but our partnership continues. Dougherty Valley High School is an extremely high-achieving and rigorous high school nestled in the quiet East Bay community of San Ramon. When I began it had a mere 1500 students and it has since grown to over 3200. With the highest test scores in the district and one of the highest in the region, Dougherty Valley has become a destination school for quality education. For me, it has been home. During my tenure here I have be lucky enough to take on a variety of leadership roles (listed below) and engage in meaningful and intentional instruction to best serve the needs of all students.
