Frontend Lead Software Engineer / Manager
SailPlan is a startup that builds software and hardware to provide high resolution, real-time data to ship operators. Our platform allows customers to optimize routes, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce overall emissions. As a senior software engineer / manager, I was in charge of leading the frontend team. I was the 3rd hire at SailPlan and was given a wide range of responsibilities as the company grew from 3 to 34 employees. When I first joined, I was doing full-stack development full-time. Once we hired frontend and backend developers, I became the frontend lead, where I was overseeing a team of 3mid-senior developers. On this particular team, I was most effective when I split my time into 85% project/team management and 15% writing code. On a typical week, the CEO would give me a high-level feature idea, which I would break down into well-defined requirements. I would then write up detailed Jira tickets (including ideas for implementation), prioritize tickets, and assign them to our developers. Some of my other job responsibilities- coming up with ideas for new features and improvements to existing features, writing/debugging code, code reviews, finding ways to improve the UI and user experience, interviewing potential hires, supporting frontend/backend/embedded team members, etc.Relevant Skills:React, JavaScript, UI / UX design, Project Management, HTML, CSS, REST API, Agile Scrum, TypeScript, Angular, Node.js, Mapbox, CanvasJS, MongoDB, GeoJSON, Figma, Git Version Control
