I have over 30 years experience in the hospitality industry, having worked in pubs and bars before opening The Deep End in my early 20s, converting an 18,000 sq ft Victorian swimming pool into a 600 capacity live music venue backed with £500k from the Bank of Ireland. I went on to open a couple of other venues, a record label and a small tech company before pretty much burning out at 30. The last company that I invested in and co-founded was Airship (then PowerText) in 2003. In May 2018 I took over the reins at Airship, re-positioning the business from an agency with a technology platform to a SaaS business focused on building self-service tools that deliver client revenue. In October 2018 we released Toggle, a platform that helps brands pre-sell revenue through gift cards, experiences and tickets. in October 2019 we raised a £500k investment from Mercia with a further £500k in July 2021. We sprinted through the pandemic, quadrupling the size of our business, making quick strategic decisions that supported the hospitality sector and secured our brand standing.In October 2022, we sold our shares to Zonal whom I entrusted with the next stage of our growth. I remain CEO of Airship and am delighted to join the exec board at Zonal. I'm proud to be a trustee of the Archer Project and Director of their social enterprise Printed by Us. I'm also treasurer of 215th Totley Scouts & a NED/investor in Joliapp.com & eltab.co.uk (I like to keep busy..😅)I'm a proud dad, Sheffielder, cyclist and foodie.

Managing DirectorThe Alternative Pub Company Sep 1997 - Apr 2003Purchased the Hillsborough Baths in 2006, a derelict 18000 sq ft Victorian swimming pool and converted it into the Deep End live music venue. This was really my first foray into business, I found a backer who loaned my £500k to buy the freehold and complete the refurbishment. I was 23 at the time of opening the venue, which was a 600 capacity unit over 2 levels and completely inexperienced in venue management. The Sheffield Licensing Officer had insisted in the granting of the license that I have some experience so I took on an Enterprise Inns lease for 3 months during the build. I'm glad I did as I learnt some hard lessons....The Deep End was a great success, with a footfall of over 5000 people a week, we pretty much ran events every night in the live room which hosted comedy, songwriters night, a quiz show (particularly funny as we had customers racing around the room on kids tricycles and smashing garden gnomes with plastic hammers). The Jam Session "Can U Jam" with the tag line... "Why play with yourself when you can play with other people" ran on a Tuesday night and Sunday afternoon was incredibly popular with 1000's of musicians playing over a 6 year period and many bands being formed. The night still goes on today under the same name with the same hosts.It was a great time and I have some amazing (and not so amazing) memories.In the same period I opened Bar Rocket in Chesterfield, a small spirits led bar (which didn't do so well) and an Enterprise Inns venue on Campo Lane in Sheffield called the art:room which was a pleasure.
