Responsibilities: Proposed and developed advanced control techniques for high speed Atomic Force Microscopes to enable sensitive imaging of biological materials. Wrote multiple successful proposals and managed associated research programs.Accomplishments* Designed and fabricated mechanisms for a novel high speed atomic force microscope (AFM). Modeled dynamics and designed adaptive vibration supressing controls that enabled nanoscale imaging at video rates. * Invented a method to indirectly measure and identify parasitic scanner resonances, and iteratively and adaptively shape command inputs to reduce their influence, leading to an 100x improvement in AFM imaging speed performance. * Characterized dynamic behavior of novel thermally-driven active cantilevers using system identification techniques, and designed and implemented a model-based controller to increase tracking bandwidth to suit high speed atomic force microscopy.
