Trainee Site EngineerWates Construction Midlands Limited Aug 1990 - Jul 1991Edgbaston & Milton KeynesThis was a fabulous opportunity for a construction undergraduate. I was selected by Wates Construction to participate in their graduate training programme for the duration of my sandwich year whilst I studied for my degree at Coventry University. The initial role was a trainee site engineer working with a team of three engineers. I was fortunate enough to be placed under the supervision of a senior engineer who really inspired me with his professionalism and work ethic (Howard I thank you). I worked on two projects: a 52,000m2 steel frame commercial building for Schucco International and a traditionally built, period commercial property on behalf of the Duchy of Cornwall. This entailed the preservation of the existing masonry façade and the introduction of a reinforced concrete frame, demolition of all other building elements and total rebuild. This project resulted in a very elegant period building which offered some wonderful challenges. I was responsible for establishing and maintaining horizontal and vertical control on both sites. Preserving the integrity of all datums and grid reference points needed for the duration of the construction phase. I was responsible for setting out roads, drainage pipe runs using lasers, setting out foundations, pile caps and levels for holding down bolts, supervising the installation of the structural steelwork frame, in-situ reinforced concrete, precast components, masonry, screed, curtain walling, formwork line and level and monitoring the level of a super flat floor which needed to be laid to within a tolerance of 3mm. There really is no substitute for practical experience and common sense. The quality and diverse nature of the experience gained on these projects, amongst others, have imparted very valuable lessons, which have served me very well throughout my career.
