Specialist, Product Operations
I'm currently working with the Customer Support and Network Operations team behind our Cross-Border Services products. My role is split into a few areas, most notably: oversight of progress towards customer feedback globally, provision of internal training for our customer support teams, and working collaboratively with our teams to tackle transaction fraud.Notable efforts I've led and collaborated on include, but are not limited to, the validation and analysis of transactions, including management of fraud cases, the continued training of 100+ colleagues over a range of topics, including Lean Six Sigma and Data Protection, the pilot of kano interviewing as an alternative means of customer feedback, and the facilitation of internal process improvement stages.
Associate Analyst, Digital Payments
As part of the Graduate Launch programme, I took part in a double rotation that saw me work within two digital teams over 16 months. In my first rotation, I developed fully functioning reference applications in JavaScript for MDES customer-facing API endpoints, alongside supporting product owners and their teams on initiatives relating to card tokenisation and push provisioning. In my second rotation, I co-led and supported projects as varied as business continuity, customer journey mapping, risk management, professional training, service/function operationalisation, and event management.I also participated with a team on a consulting project advising technology-focused social enterprises on how their social impact model aligns with community and business best practice, and how they could comprehensively measure their social impact. A contribution of mine regarding the relative financial outlook for a beneficiary group earned special recognition.
Team Leader
As of the final term of 2019, I represented the society and its projects at a university and national level. My responsibilities covered strategic decisions, external communications, and ensuring the welfare of all members and beneficiaries. As Team Leader, I looked to enable our executive team to develop their projects, increase our outreach, and grow as socially-conscious individuals. Our collective goal for the year was to build the foundations for the society to thrive long-term, whilst also looking to empower and impact as many people as possible. My personal goal for the year was to enable my teammates to grow, and to lead in a way that allowed us to improve the lives of everyone we interact with.We worked with a range of partners and groups to provide support to autistic individuals in Lancaster, and we worked with an international team to develop prototypes for localised wind turbines for remote islands in Ghana. The society turned a profit for the year, and we connected with students, community members and corporate partners to achieve our impact and outreach goals. To conclude the year, we reached the semi-final of the national competition for the third year in a row, maintaining our strong position within the programme. But most importantly, together we demonstrated the potential that every student has to make a difference.
Project Leader
As Project Leader, I worked close with the executive team at Lancaster, and oversaw a new academic period in which we aimed to grow our outreach, and empower our beneficiaries to develop their skills, education and mindset using the platform we developed. My responsibilities lied with the new project team, who helped in developing the project beyond its foundations, ensuring a financial grant to provide stability to our work, and increasing our beneficiary outreach beyond double figures. At the end of the year, the project headlined alongside one of our local projects at the Nationals 2019 competition. As a team, we were proud to do our part in helping the society reach the Semi-Finals, in a group that comprised of the eventual winners, Enactus Nottingham.
Web Developer
As Web Developer, I worked with a team of dedicated individuals to develop an online platform for the purpose of bringing together skilled, high-potential individuals from South Africa and Europe, to economically empower South African townships. On the one hand, there are many high-potential entrepreneurs in South African townships who lack world view and global thinking. On the other, there are many highly-skilled Europeans who would like to help in areas such as South Africa, but lack the local insight. Many entrepreneurs in South Africa set up micro-enterprises that are limited in profitability and innovation. By combining the out-of-the-box thinking of individuals within Europe, with the drive and potential of some of the townships most active members, we believe we can empower groups to grow quality projects and enterprises.
Co-Organizer
After participating as a developer in Startup Weekend Lancaster 2018, I was asked to take the leap as an organiser of the upcoming 2019 event. As co-organiser, I was responsible for supporting the development of the event, in particular appointing the coach and judging panel alongside handling the logistics and finances of the event. Over the weekend, I worked with our amazing volunteer team and facilitator to ensure that the entire event went as planned. The weekend saw 60 participants work to develop their startup ideas from the ground up, with only 54 hours to move through the stages of validation, idea development, business model generation, and MVP trials among other tasks. We were greatly supported by ten amazing coaches and three fantastic judges throughout the event, and we were inspired to watch and support the development of some amazing startup ideas. The final prize of £1000 funding and mentorship to the best idea was split between two teams, pioneers of what was an amazingly high quality group of competitors. Within the challengers, there were not one, not two, but FOUR teams that produced technology products, ranging from apps, to motion sensors for CCTV cameras, and hardware switches.
Summer Intern, Digital Payments
Over the summer, I worked directly with the Product Development and Innovation team on new and existing APIs relating to secure card payments, digital card art, tokenization, and fraud prevention. My responsibilities included developing a strategy for further development of the APIs within Mastercard's remit, researching into current API market trends and best practices, and testing digital card art usage outside of the tokenisation process. My final provisions included, but were not limited to, changes to API documentation for MDES 1.2.10, three slide decks covering API market insights, best practices, and digital card art, and walkthroughs discussing topics such as using Swagger 2.0 for the PAM API, and tailoring APIs to internal standardisation requirements.
Team Leader
As Team Leader, I worked with a team of alumni to grow the programme beyond its previous success. As a team, we took two teams separately to Durban, South Africa this year to begin their experiential leadership and personal development process.Having experienced the challenge first-hand in 2018, I feel that I have learned a lot from the previous team leaders, and being a part of the leadership team of 2019 has been both positively challenging and humbling. Working with and for the two teams as they developed their social projects has easily been one of the best experiences of my life, and I'm excited to see how their time in ZA makes a difference in their lives and careers.
Challenger
The South Africa Challenge is an entrepreneurial leadership development programme that concludes with two weeks on-the-ground in Durban, where we as the participants work in groups on a social, economical, or environmental project of our choice. Throughout the programme, we partake in weekly leadership and personal development sessions in which we are challenged to focus on goals we set at the start of the programme. The aim of the programme is to provide a hands-on, entrepreneurial leadership challenge for whom the organisers believe to be high potential emerging leaders. Each of the participants are put into real-life scenarios designed to take us out of our comfort zone, and provide the opportunity to develop our self-awareness as well as our leadership skills.During my time in Durban, I was part of a group of four that worked on a water project that did research into the unique issues affecting some of the rural areas of KwaZulu Natal. Before we arrived, our initial research suggested that access to safe drinking water was the most pertinent issue in the community we would be working with. After speaking to the local community and seeing the issue for ourselves, we realised that the issue was not just access, but water purification. The end result of our project was a water innovation event - a networking opportunity for local water industry to come together and share their experience, knowledge, and ideas regarding the water crisis. We also used the opportunity to provide Moringa Oleifera seeds to locals within the community to use for farming purposes.
Business Officer
I joined LUCSS as an executive on recommendation of the departing Business Officer of the society. In the role, I aimed to bring my experience within industry and from working on various social projects, and help to develop the reputation and outreach of the society so that it could bring maximum benefit to the students of the Science and Technology departments within Lancaster University. My responsibilities involved representing the society and its interests to external parties, handling external affairs, working together with businesses and societies to develop partnerships and sponsorship opportunities, and the management of society business events on-campus.As part of the societies exec, I was also responsible for attending all weekly society meetings and helping to represent the society in staff/student meetings. My contribution saw us develop sponsorships with 3 companies, providing the society with just under £1000, and thanks to the support of the department and team, we additionally hosted a number of corporate representatives, including Apple, Dolby Digital, and Nintendo. As a result of our collective efforts, our team were shortlisted finalists for the Milkrounds National Society Awards 2019 for “Outstanding Contribution to a Society”. After pitching at the event, I was given special recognition for my public speaking skills.
Education Volunteer
As an Education Volunteer, I helped executive members and TA's with the provision of revision sessions and lab support. In particular, I was responsible for co-developing revision sessions for first and second years, co-presented and spoke at revision events, and co-supervised revision labs. Additionally, I represented the society as a speaker on numerous occasions.
Secretary
As Secretary, my responsibilities included ensuring society efficiency, minute taking at meetings, room booking and event management, and the delivery of the society newsletter in collaboration with the Vice President and the Media and Communications Officer. As a society, USV hopes to expand its student outreach, and deliver projects that provide a lasting impact for those that attend and benefit from them.
Strategist
U Social Venture is a student-run community that aims to spread the knowledge of social entrepreneurship through short-term projects that tackle social, economic, and environmental issues. As a new society member, I initially started as a strategist for the Diversity Project, an open event which aims to celebrate diversity and culture at Lancaster University and within the city.As Strategist, my responsibilities included overseeing project meetings and ensuring that the team stayed on track each week. I also supported the team in the development of risk assessments, SMART goals, and weekly project reports.
It Support Technician
Initially starting off as a Junior Representative, I was responsible for maintaining the systems and networks that a number of our volunteers used, as well as helping to update the West Cumbria branch's website on a regular basis, and represent the charity in the local community. Our branch put forward and developed a range of successful programmes. Notably, we successfully neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped hundreds of cats across West Cumbria, ranging from St Bees to Aspatria, Penrith, and Barrow-in-Furness.We worked with local councils on a scheme to give closure to families that lost cats to traffic accidents. We also provided Copeland Council with microchip scanners to identify cats that were killed on the road.
Cyber Security Analyst
At Prima Uno, I had a notably flexible role. I delved into a broad range of fields, including Cyber Security, Project Planning, Mechanical Engineering, Risk Management, Business Intelligence and Data Analysis.A multi-sector expert in project planning, the firm have been growing consistently since their foundation. Among other work, I contributed to a successful framework bid that extended the long-term planning partnership between Prima Uno and LLWR, continuing a working partnership that has outlasted strong competition.I was responsible for the security, management, and expansion of the company's IT endpoints and network, requiring me to respond to and resolve technical issues, and tailor each system to company policy. My management ensured that the company network adhered to the HM Government's Cyber Essentials certification requirements from 2016/17 to 2017/18.Additionally, I engaged in a £23M dispute resolution between a group of companies, where I developed VB macros to support the analysis of a group of Primavera P6 schedules, and helped senior planners to unravel the facts of the projects.
