Starting at the end of August, 2011, his position was expanded to include aiding students in their quest to master medication calculations and arterial blood gas interpretation. Dan runs open office hours where he works one-on-one or in small groups with students. Dan reviews the material, runs flashcards, quizzes students, animatedly gesticulates while speaking in a captivating manner, creates novel worksheets and study guides, and connects students with online study resources and practice exams. Students who are struggling with medication calculations can just come sit with Dan and keep doing practice questions for two hours until they get it. Students who struggle to memorize all of the vocabulary needed for Anatomy & Physiology can meet weekly with Dan just to talk through the lecture one more time while stopping to define all the terms and use the words in context in conversation. That kind of tutoring gives motivated students additional opportunities for success.

Research AssistantInflammatory Bowel Disease Center May 2004 - Jul 2004Worked on a variety of studies centering around the efficacy of a Calcitonin nasal spray in treating low bone density in children with inflammatory bowel disease. He was responsible for past medical chart review to determine study eligibility, documenting applicable past medical history, and processing raw data (Vit D, Ca, and PTH levels) utilizing Microsoft Excel. One of the studies was presented at the prestigious Digestive Disease Week (DDW) conference and another was later published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dan learned an awful lot in those few months working with the talented folks at the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Children's Hospital Boston, and he spent a lot of time looking directly at 25-hydroxy Vitamin D levels which turned out to be of critical importance in his understanding of disease and of the world. 35.8% of children we studied with IBD had 25-hydroxy Vitamin D levels less than 15 ng/ml and 18.7% had levels less than 8 ng/ml! And this is back when levels of 15 were thought to be adequate. Dan believes levels of 30 ng/ml are needed just to prevent frank deficiency and levels of somewhere around 40-60 ng/ml are needed for optimal health. This was really cutting-edge research whose full implications are still unknown. Dan was very fortunate to work under Dr. Helen Pappa and the legendary Dr. Richard Grand. Dan believes Vitamin D deficiency plays a causative role in the development of autoimmune diseases such as IBD and that Vitamin D supplementation to achieve 25-hydroxy Vitamin D levels of at least 45 ng/ml should be a first-line treatment with monitoring of Vitamin D, calcium, and parathyroid hormone levels for IBD and many other conditions. Dan believes it important to fix an out-of-whack homeostatic variable prior to giving patients boatloads of individual prescription drugs to treat what may be various multisystem manifestations of Vitamin D deficiency.
