About Dan Coppen

I am a designer, artist and creative technologist. I create playful products, games and spaces that explore the interplay between humans and technology. With a background in mechanical engineering from Imperial College London and innovation design from the Royal College of Art, I have a passion for exploring the playful potential of both digital and analogues technologies from artificial intelligence to handmade crayons. My work has been displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum (2022) as well as been awarded in the Dezeen Awards (2021). I also share my playful experiments through a successful YouTube channel, which has gathered over 300,000 subscribers and 30 million views since its launch.

    I was selected as an artist fellow to participate in the Civic Creative Base Tokyo (CCBT) Art Incubation programme. With guided mentorship from nationally renowned media artists such as Seiji Saito, the founder of Rhizomatiks, and Takayuki Ito, the R&D director at YCAM, I helped developed the Deviation Game. Best described as 'Pictionary but verses an AI', to win this game players must must draw things in a way that only humans can understand but the AI can't.

    I was selected to take part in the Wood Change Camp, an artist residency organised by Loftwork in collaboration with the Japanese Ministry of Forestry and Fisheries. The programme challenged us to experiment, ideate, prototype to create a new application for Japan's abundant wood resources. The result was Forest Crayons, a set of crayons pigmented entirely from Japanese wood.
