I am a Brazilian PhD student at the University of Bayreuth, currently affiliated with the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies, which is part of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence. Currently based in Germany, I am writing my PhD research on the captivating world of wax print fabrics, bridging Brazil and Nigeria, where I have spent some months during my fieldwork, learning Yoruba and getting to know the blooming fashion industry in Lagos. My research focuses on mapping the development of wax print styles and their visual agency, exploring their profound connections to identity, racism, globalization, fashion, and tradition.My academic journey has been enriched by my diverse background and experiences in fashion design and visual arts. Formally a fashion designer I obtained a Master's degree in Visual Arts, bringing a unique perspective to the fields of Arts and Fashion Studies.My dedication to the field of African arts and culture extends beyond academia. I have had the privilege of participating as curator of two remarkable exhibitions at the Iwalewahaus museum of African Arts. One exhibition, "Not Yet," centered around the textile collection and decolonial curatorial practices, while "Bewegte Versammlungen" (Floating Assemblies), celebrated the dynamic movements within the collection.In "Bewegte Versammlungen," I had the opportunity to showcase recently acquired wax print fabrics and dresses from two exceptional designers, Lisa Folawiyo and Ituen Bassey. These acquisitions were a result of insightful interviews conducted during my fieldwork in Nigeria, adding a vibrant and contemporary dimension to the exhibition.Through my academic pursuits and curatorial engagements, I hope to shed light on the intricate narratives and cultural significance embedded within African art forms. By exploring the interplay between fashion, identity, tradition, and global dynamics, I aim to contribute to a broader dialogue on social and artistic transformations.
