About Dane Hiser
Close to twenty-years-experience across fundraising, marketing and communications in the non-profit sector – and two years in a marketing role in education – as well as time developing a small business opportunity in the performing arts. Specialties – skills, experiences, knowledge, insights, learnings – the whole bag of tricks:- Thinking “outside the box” and seeing the need for creativity in areas that, outside of fundraising, may seem to be the furthest away from that part of the mind as possible, like data, expense budgets and more.- Acknowledging the mantra all fundraisers should be set on: “It’s about donors, not donations”.- Valuing friendship and people-pleasing above all else - acknowledging that every donor, fundraiser, colleague, agency, supplier, board member and person we support are none of those labels – they are friends working together on an important cause that is the exact reason that friendship exists. - Realising in every charity, no matter how common it may be – the key to cutting through the clutter, standing out and attracting attention, is identifying what makes it unique and what earns the charity the right to stand out on its own. This will help counter the quite understandable donor question of (as an example) – “Why aren’t you cancer research charities all one giant organisation, instead of many? It’s too confusing - it’s too much, too much mail, too many emails, too many ads, too many messages, too many asks, and too many events…” - Identifying that while marketing is important for awareness – no banner or TV ad is more effective in terms of a tangible response, than a 5 minute segment on the news, or a televised press conference in front of a hospital – or a real family, a real researcher, a real result, real consequence, real pain, real stakes, real progress…than a piece of communication that could earn you $500,000 overnight, without needing to run a $500,000 string of TV ads. - Never losing team-player focus: first to pick up the phone, volunteering anytime I can, sharing any fundraising/learning opportunities, offering ultimate flexibility to the team if a task can’t be completed in time (ie: instead of asking “why?”, asking “how can I/we help”?). Focussing on morale-building by implementing staff recognition awards, celebrating individual milestones and achievements for staff when I can, holding impromptu morning teas, thanking every person involved in a campaign (rather than just a collective) and acknowledging all above and beyond efforts.
Listed skills include Fundraising, Publicity, Sponsorship, Copywriting, and 46 others.

Individual Giving Manager

Individual Giving Executive
CurrentResponsibilities:- Managing every aspect of all four direct mail (and eDM) donation campaigns per year, from briefing to planning to fulfilment to evaluation. This project management involves coordinating input from internal communications (copy, design and digital) and data teams, managing external supplier relationships (printers and mail house), reviewing, editing and approving creative output, and checking and refining data selections and coordinating the DM around telemarketing programs to ensure one doesn’t infringe on the other. I am responsible for the sending of over 140,000 direct mail pieces and over 400,000 eDM’s a year, and generating around one million dollars a year. Then after campaigns are lodged, I support the team to ensure timely processing and receipting of donations. - Coordinating every element of four raffle campaigns a year. This includes managing a telemarketing agency, and other suppliers as well as arranging: permit applications and approvals, supply and delivery of raffle prizes, production and supply of printed collateral (and continually managing stock), digital assets, approval of telemarketing scripts, provision of suppression files, monitoring and evaluating results, contacting and publishing winners, the handling of daily raffle inquiries and reporting results back to state regulatory bodies. - Managing and developing the regular giving program, including the facilitation of acquisition, retention, upgrading and reactivation, as well as the management of the donor journey.- Managing donor care. This includes handling daily donor inquiries, nurturing relationships and ensuring satisfaction.
Owner/Promoter
Responsibilities:Developing and running every aspect of the business, including: venue liaison, artist booking and management, show scheduling, copy writing, social media, advertising and promotion, sponsorship, supplier relationships, budgeting and running the shows (and charity events).Achievements: - Successfully opened The Laugh Stand in three venues (Kings Cross Hotel, Pelicano, Harold Park Hotel), attracted significant and loyal audiences, gained respect within the industry, and drew many big name acts (including; Tony Martin, Mikey Robins, Sam Simmons, Merrick Watts, Tommy Dean, Matt Okine, Peter Berner, Tom Ballard, Fiona O’Loughlin, Tim Ross, Lawrence Mooney, Nick Cody, and The Doug Anthony Allstars).- Built the business on my own from the ground up, achieved a Certificate IV in small business and ran every show on a monthly, then weekly basis; at times while working full time.
Telemarketer
Responsibilities:Selling raffle tickets over the phone for charities like Kidzwish and the Heart Research Institute. Involves becoming an expert on specific charities and building relationships with people to lead to sales. I received training in sales and “the art of influence” and regularly exercise negotiation and objection handling skills.
Marketing Projects Officer
Responsibilities: - Running an extensive audit of the university’s printing and publications to analyse and report on the existing situation and recommending ways forward for reducing cost, bringing more jobs to the internal supplier, managing uses of the brand and streamlining processes. This involved conducting over seventy interviews, analysing data and spend, collecting and reviewing samples and producing a report with recommendations. - Supporting the Marketing Services team, particularly a Marketing Coordinator who was working part time. I then had my contract extended to carry out the role full time, while continuing the audit when she went on maternity leave. This involved: event marketing and promotion, media liaison, community engagement, assisting with rebranding, managing supplier relationships, developing promotional items and collateral, as well as scripting and filming promotional videos for the corporate website. Achievements: - I was originally brought on for a six month contract, at the end of which the Director of Marketing Services extended to two years so I could continue the audit and be given the responsibility of taking on my colleague’s Marketing Coordinator role full time when she went on maternity leave.- UNSW gave me a dilemma when I started: The university was spending over seven and a half million dollars on print and design, and over seventy percent of that went offsite to over two hundred and fifty suppliers. So I successfully conducted an audit and produced a concise report with eleven recommendations for ways forward, which were all approved by the Vice-Chancellor and adopted.
