About Daniel Hartman Jr
It was not until recently I realized I followed in my parents' footsteps. My mother was a special education teacher for 30 years, dedicated to teaching those that needed a unique teaching approach. My father spent his life passionate about public service as a volunteer firefighter. They responded to the call to action, building strong communities through service. Growing up in the wake of an exceeding number of disasters including September 11th, Hurricane Katrina, an epidemic of mass shootings and wildfires fueled by climate change, I realized action needed to be taken to build resilient communities across the world. And when that resiliency fails, someone needs to be there, ready to respond. For the past 15 years, I responded to that call, beginning as a volunteer firefighter, rising through the ranks to eventually take on the Vice President role of the 501(C)3 organization, participating in the management of budgets, purchasing, training and member services. I took my passion for the volunteer fire service and turned it into a full-time career, first by graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Community and Human Services concentrating in Emergency Management. I moved on to roles in Environment, Health and Safety and Emergency Management in higher education, leading safety, planning, and preparedness efforts so that those putting their all into learning and growing in college, could enjoy their experience in a safe environment that is so deserved. Eventually, I answered the call to become a firefighter in a city that faces medical emergencies and fires at a far greater rate than much of the country. I have been privileged to be a part of Engine 33 on the East side of Baltimore, serving some of the most in need communities, facing a disproportionate number of emergencies due to poverty and a lack of resources. Over the years I have become skilled at identifying short falls in planning and preparedness efforts and have a history of addressing vulnerabilities that could lead to disaster. In the future, I plan to expand my knowledge base through continued education and eventually contribute new and effective strategies to the Emergency Management field.
