I’ve been immersed in the music industry my entire life. It started with a dream of pop stardom and a few entertaining detours: I was in Hawaii’s first punk band, Open Wide, and thanks to a clerical error, I graced Top of the Pops as the “stand-in bass player” for 80s pop/jazz icons Matt Bianco. I also dabbled in punk-funk with my brother Charlie Higson’s band, The Higsons. While those years were colorful (and occasionally chaotic), the real magic happened when I shifted gears into the world of applied music and sonic branding.For over two decades, I’ve specialized in sonic branding, helping brands amplify their identities through music and sound. As the founder of Smith & Western, based in the creative hub of Surry Hills, I lead a talented team that crafts bespoke sonic identities, soundtracks, and audio experiences for clients around the globe. From airlines to fast food, luxury cars to nappies, the sound we create doesn’t just enhance campaigns—it helps tell stories that stick.Our work spans far beyond advertising, too. We’ve composed original music for hit TV shows, including the Fremantle/Channel 10 drama Wonderland, Channel 7’s Australia: The Story of Us, and Boy to Man. Whether it’s a cinematic score or a memorable sonic logo, I’m passionate about connecting people to brands, emotions, and narratives through the power of sound.Life’s a soundtrack, and I’m enjoying every track.

Running the production department at one of Australia’s biggest and busiest commercial music studios during their heyday.
