Over the course of the last 20 years I’ve worked to cultivate a skill set that is uniquely suited to personnel management, public safety, and customer relationship building. In 2006, I joined the Guest Services team of the Tacoma Sheraton. This was a shift in paradigm from the reactivity of food service or retail that many take on early in their working lives, to the proactive pursuit of customer satisfaction in the hospitality industry. In a market with myriad alternatives for prospective customers, it was clear that building rapport with new clients and managing existing connections would lead not only to personal benefit but to the success of the hotel as a whole. A year later the long standing Tacoma Sheraton was sold to Provenance Hotels and became the Hotel Murano. A transition from a convention focused traditional hotel, to a boutique experience including glass art, craft food and beverage, and trendy decor necessitated a push toward establishing the new brand and building a new customer base. Over the next six years I helped achieve and maintain the Forbes Four Star status of our property. In the supervisory role of Bell Captain, I was able to build and train a front of house service team worthy of transplant to the finest hotels in any major metropolitan city. In 2013, to pursue growth through managerial experience, I departed from the Murano to pursue my M.B.A. at Pacific Lutheran University while working in the Department of Campus Safety. In the role of Assistant Director of Campus Safety Operations at P.L.U. I have the unique opportunity to bring an approach of intentional service to a field that is often stigmatized as cold and authoritative. I have worked to instill in the team a sense of balance between policy enforcement and warm proactive relationship management with the student body.As I approached a decade working with students, staff, and faculty in a silo focused on community safety I began to seek broader applications of our programs approach. In 2021 I shifted my focus to larger scale public safety when I joined the Security Division of Pierce County Facilities Management. In this role I am able to contribute to the health and safety of the larger Pierce County population by providing safe spaces for our residents to live, work, and learn.
