I am an Editor and Exec Producer with the BBC's multi award-winning investigative documentary team, BBC Eye Investigations. From 2018-21 I was a co-founding Exec Producer at BBC Africa Eye. In four years our team produced more than 80 original documentaries — investigations that exposed crime, corruption, and abuse by governments and individuals across the continent. These films changed laws, shaped policy, and made major contributions towards justice and accountability, including the conviction and imprisonment of child killers. At the same time I created the BBC’s first dedicated 'visual forensics' video team, a specialist unit that deploys cutting-edge open source ('OSINT') techniques to expose human rights violations and atrocities. With this exceptionally talented team I have made films that have won more than fifteen major international awards, including a Peabody, an RTS, and a Howard Scripps Award, as well as multiple Webbies, Frontline Club, BBC News, Amnesty International, Rory Peck Trust and DIG Awards. The best known of these films is 'Anatomy of a Killing', which I commissioned, wrote, produced and directed. The approach used in that investigation, as well as the style in which the story was told, has been widely imitated across the industry. More recently, working with colleagues in India, I have built an entirely new investigations team to make documentaries from across South Asia. Our first film has been nominated for an International Emmy award. I have a track record of managing complex investigations (including undercover deployments) and making documentary films from hostile or difficult places, including conflict zones and surveillance states. This experience was gained over years reporting or filming stories in the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. Since returning to the UK I have used these skills to run high-risk investigations while keeping my teams, sources, and contributors safe. As well as producing and exec-producing films, I have been instrumental in designing BBC Africa Eye’s digital strategy, recruiting its talent, creating its visual identity, training its producers, and making sure that our films land on social media with maximum impact. I started as a writer and remain convinced that high-quality writing is central to visual journalism and to storytelling of any kind. I’m fascinated by how stories work, on the screen and on the page, and have designed a 5-day storytelling course for early-career documentary filmmakers. Do get in touch if you’re interested to know more about this.
