Simulations matched experimental behavior and identified magnetic field misalignments as a possible cause of beam instability.

Stellarators are designed to achieve nuclear fusion by confining high-temperature plasma with magnetic fields. The magnetic fields must be designed to confine the high energy alpha particles, products of fusion reactions. I studied stellarator particle trajectories for a series of optimized fields by developing an algorithm to classify different types of particle trajectories, and compare the particle loss rates of each field.
