Profile bio

About Daniel Austin

I currently work as Radioactive Waste Specialist at UKRI, where I support radioactive waste characterisation, conditioning and disposal projects, primarily at ISIS Neutron and Muon source. This role includes the use of specialised tools and skills to assess the radionuclide content of waste items to inform disposal decisions, the opening of a disposal route to LLWR and ensuring that our practices and capabilities remain compliant with WAC of LLWR. I am also working on a project to develop disposal routes for ISIS's HAW items that have remained difficult to dispose of thus far. This role has allowed me to further develop other skills hat I had not had the opportunity to do so during my PhD, such as gaining a detailed understanding of the policy, regulation and licensing with guide radioactive waste management, broader characterisation skills that are applicable to large scale radioactive waste assessment, development of BAT papers and support/advise ISIS users on best practices for waste management.I obtained a 2:1 degree in Applied Physics (BSc) from the University of Hull where I gained an extensive technical understanding of a variety of the fundamental principals relevant to the field. Following this, I obtained a postgraduate degree in Nuclear Science and Technology (MSc) from the University of Sheffield and was graded at a Merit. My MSc degree gave me an opportunity to learn about many different aspects of the nuclear industry, ranging from advanced reactor physics to policy and regulation and I developed a deep interest in the subject area. Consequently, I continued my studies and undertook a PhD at the Immobilisation Science Laboratory at the University of Sheffield where I worked to develop novel complex ceramic systems for actinide wastes. I had a particular focus on developing structural models of crystalline systems utilising XAS analysis techniques (EXAFS, XANES) and evaluation radiation response of ceramic monoliths through heavy-ion implantation and Glancing Angle XAS.

Phd Researcher

I worked during my PhD on the development of highly radiation tolerant ceramic wasteforms for the immobilisation of HLW from nuclear reprocessing. This role afforded me the opportunity to devil a range of technical and soft skills. This includes a high level competency in X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) techniques, X-ray Diffraction, Electron Microscopy, heavy ion-implantations and synthesis methods for ceramic materials. More broadly, I have produced written documents that can hold up to the scrutiny of peer review processes, presented my research to a variety of audiences and maintained a self-imposed work schedule to facilitate the undertaking, and ultimate achievement, of my PhD.
