About Daniel Payne

My work as a librarian is rooted firmly in engagement and collaboration with faculty, students, and the wider community, using a dialogic approach to partnership. This community-engaged stance has informed my teaching, reference work, collection management practices, and research interests. Between 2002 to 2021, I worked as Head of Reference and Instructional Services at the OCAD University Library. During my tenure, I developed an active information literacy program and maintained strong connections with teaching faculty as liaison to the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences/School of Interdisciplinary Studies. An innovative initiative I developed involved a site intervention curriculum where studio-based pedagogy is used to facilitate the creation of site-specific works designed to be embedded in the library’s physical space. Through use of creative production processes, students learn to interpret and comment on topical issues in librarianship using their own emotive artistic voice. In 2008, I created a graduate level art librarianship course for the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information and has taught it variously since then. I developed the syllabus, assignment structure, reading lists, course outline, and learning outcomes for the course. In managing reference and access services at OCAD University, I have maintained staffing schedules, provided ongoing mentorship, and facilitated the training of peer librarians and paraprofessional student employees. Until 2014, my work included serving as head of access services which included forging collaborations with the circulation services coordinator to develop, enhance, and maintain library policies. Participating in professional organizations provides enriching outreach opportunities. My work with the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA ) has been enriching and was highlighted by serving a two-year term as the Canadian Liaison on the Executive Board between 2012 to 2014. Being able to represent Canadian art and design institutions within an international forum, especially through coordinating the Melva Dwyer Book Awards, was a unique honour and led to further opportunities such as leading the society’s Open Access Task Force from 2016 to 2017. Finally, my role as the site-coordinator for the TRY+ Library Conference has been instrumental for me to engage the Dorothy H. Hoover Library with the wider GTA academic research community.
