I worked in Dr. Jeff Anderson's lab in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology within the College of Agricultural Sciences. I assisted graduate students and faculty with experiments in plant-microbe interaction, as well as worked on experiments on my own, and gained experience in molecular biology and microbiology lab techniques. I developed my own research project studying how the Type III Secretion System of Pantoea agglomerans pathovar Betae is regulated in response to plant-derived sugars, based on which I completed an honors thesis. I also assisted with day-to-day lab maintenance and upkeep, including solution and media preparation, and plant care.

I interned in Dr. Maureen Hanson’s lab on a molecular genetics project using restriction enzyme cloning to engineer bicarbonate transporters from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii into plants. I designed PCR primers, built expression cassettes and transformed E. coli and Nicotiana benthamiana cells. In addition I completed the BTI Computational Biology Center Bioinformatics course.

I interned in Dr. Lirong Zeng's lab in the Department of Plant Pathology through a National Science Foundation-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates program titled "Molecular Biology and Biochemistry of Plant Immunity against Biotic Stress." I worked on a project involving ubiquitin E2 enzymes UBC7, UBC13, and UBC14 in Arabidopsis thaliana that may work in ER-Associated Protein Degradation. I worked on using genotyping PCR to identify homozygous single mutant lines for the genes associated with these proteins, and also used DNA extraction methods to collect the samples for PCR, and did cloning PCR on plasmid and bacterial samples for a separate project in the lab.

I volunteered as a representative for the student body of Eatonville High School at each school board meeting during the 2016-2017 school year. I attended and participated in each meeting and provided commentary on the decisions made by the school board while gaining experience in leadership among the student body and learning more about the procedure of executive board meetings.
