I have over 20 years experience making custom visual products. While living in Atlanta in the late 1990s, I worked for a company that made packaging props for the commercial photography industry as well as packaging prototypes. This involved cutting and assembling printed material into three dimensional objects using an exacto blade, adhesives and printed shrink film. Also while there I worked with a Gerber Sabre CNC table router and matched Pantone colors using inks. I have worked on products seen on commercials all over the world. Moving back to my home state of Maine, I found work in at a small down east screen printing shop. While there I learned all aspects of screen printing apparel. From design using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, to printing film, color separations, shooting screens, spreading emulsion and the best order to print colors. Relocating to Portland and enjoying working in a visual industry I found a job at a sign company. I began using old engraving machines and a Vision CNC table router, as well as doing a lot of hand assembly of signs. Predominately these were ADA way finding signs made of acrylic, wood and some metal with frequent decorative accents. Utilizing Omega Composer software the various room numbers and sign text with braille (when needed) to be cut out on the router. I was responsible for determining what materials were required and estimate how long the job would take to produce and plan my other jobs accordingly to meet deadlines. I expressed interest in learning other aspects of the sign industry and learned how to run the new Agfa Annapurna UV printer that was purchased. These responsibilities involved pre-flight inspection of the print files to make minor adjustments using Adobe Illustrator. Full operation and maintenance of the printer. Performing color matches to Pantone colors and paint swatches to enable the printer to reproduce the color, being aware of the lighting. When needed I worked with the Agfa maintenance technician to improve my understanding of how the printer operated for future troubleshooting. Frequently I would use a Krongsberg i-cut table, enabling me to cut out images I had printed to specified cut paths assigned in Illustrator. To help where needed I also filled in often to run the companies vinyl cutter. Plotting letters and shapes, weeding and applying transfer tape and laying them down according to the determined specifications.In short I really enjoy making custom visual products, using an exacto blade, working with my hands, problem solving and utilizing software driven equipment.
