About Daniel Bennett

I am a HCI and User Experience researcher and Lecturer at the University of Bristol. My work on UX and gaming pushes beyond ideas of "gamification", intrinsic motivation and immediate satisfaction. I revise and expand the use of Self-Determination Theory in UX to address more integrated forms of motivation and engagement. In particular I combine this approach with data science techniques to improve our ability to identify user groups with distinct needs and motivations, allowing the improvement of design interventions.I also develop methods to infer user experience from input on widely available input technologies such as computer mice, game-pads, and eye-trackers, allowing systems to better adapt to user needs. Here I draw on cognitive and human movement sciences, and dynamical systems theory.
