Community Learning Disability Nurse in the LSCFT Intensive Support Learning Disability Team

The student empowerment group works with the Health and Social Care faculty to try and improve the student experience and deal with student issues that arise. As co chair I help to co-ordinate and report back on issues as well as working on ongoing projects.

Providing a student opinion to the committee. The committee is dealing with issues in the ongoing academic year and is also writing and planning a new syllabus to meet the NMC Code of Conduct 2019 requirements for the academic year 2020-2021 onwards.

Working towards being a learning disability nurse. I am currently approximately halfway through my course. As well as successfully completing the required academic work, to a good standard so far I have been able to take gain further experience;I recently helped to guest lecture first year students on placement anxiety and the importance of managing it having been asked to do so. I have helped with various recruitment days I have been a peer mentor for first year studentsI helped with the reviewing of the course content I am currently in the process of applying to be a student quality ambassador and am also hoping to help with some academic research this year. The society is a society for people with both hidden and visible disabilities. We have done a variety of fun activities as well as linking with other societies and the students union to try and improve peoples understanding and perception of what it is like to be a person and or a student with a disability. In terms of skills it has improved my communication skills in terms of hosting meetings and emailing people. Helping people who contact us via telephone, text email or in person deal with their feelings about what is going on in their life. This could be about pretty much anything from loneliness to actively suicidal feelings. This has significantly developed my communication skills, particularly in terms of dealing with people in emotional states. This was my final placement of the second year. I was able to work and learn from different members of the multidisciplinary team including speech and language therapists, psychologists and physiotherapists. I was also able to spend some time learning about wound dressings. I was able to develop my skills in data analysis and using ABC charts.

Student Learning Disability Nursing placement at an assessment and treatment unit for people with learning disabilities also suffering mental health issues. I got to improve my medicines management including giving my first depot injection and learning a lot about working with the Mental Health and Mental Capacity acts.

This is the first student nursing placement of my second year of my learning disability nursing degree. I have able to do a variety of activities to help develop my nursing skills. I help to cover shifts when people are ill or on leave helping to care for the residents meeting their personal care and general well being needs. Having completed a very enjoyable student nursing placement here it has been really nice to be asked to come back in an employed capacity.

At the end of the year my negotiated practice experience gave me the opportunity to work somewhere that we would not go to on the local placement circuit. The therapeutic support service at Bryn Y Neuadd is one of the only support services run on a social model. The service users are encouraged and supported to develop skills to the greatest extent that they can. Third student nursing placement. This time working in a forensic learning disability setting. I learned a lot about dealing with people who have more high functioning learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorder. I continued to learn about medication management and further developed my nursing skills.

Second Student nursing placement I was able to learn more about medication management and personal care and continued to learn lots about caring for people in a respite care home.

First nursing placement helping to care for a variety of residents with severe learning disabilities. Learning lots about their needs and how to care for them.

Working for the Lloyds Banking group to help them with their PPI cases with the Financial Ombudsman. It was necessary to carefully analyse evidence to determine an outcome. Research more evidence if needed. Liaise with customers, the ombudsman and other colleagues. Good communication skills were essential.
