Area of Activity: In addition to my role Head of BKW Technology Center, I am responsible for Innovation management (since Jan. 2016), product development and management for the Division Grids (since Sept. 2016). The area of responsibility spans from piloting early ideas and emerging technologies with scientific partners to life cycle management of established products. The task of the BKW Technology Center is to leverage the internal expertise together with research partners and drive new solutions up to the demonstrator or pilot state and beyond (TRL 5 to 9). Area of Activity: At ABB Turbo Systems AG, I was leading the team R&D Turbocharging which is part of the Technology and Engineering Division of ABB Turbo Systems AG. ABB Turbo Systems AG is the leading supplier of Swiss High Tech turbocharging systems on the global market for large Diesel and Gas engines as they are used in ships, power plants, heavy off road equipment or long haul freight train locomotives.Expertise: The work centers around modelling and simulation of large Diesel and Gas engines, their turbocharging gear as well as any other equipment along the air and gas path. Partnering with key customers in joint development projects assures top results and sound market knowledge. Special focus is given on performance and environmental impact.The department R&D Turbocharging is organized in two groups: One of the groups is developing and maintaining the simulation software with all the necessary pre- and postprocessing tools. The second group is performing complex studies on the subject of turbocharging Diesel and gas engines, using their own competence and resources and close cooperation with customers around the globe. Further, training and support of the sales engineering network contributes to high customer satisfaction.Business Contribution:(1) Input to the company's strategy process by technology scouting and a review of upcoming engine technology that will turn into chances for future business or will require dedicated long term investigations and/or development.(2) Develop advanced concepts for turbocharging large Diesel and Gas engines and identify future development trends(3) Support close cooperation with key customers and their product development: Performance requirement definition, assess and review performance data from test bed and engine tests.(4) Provide simulation software, tools, user training and trouble shooting for R&D engineers and sales and application engineers throughout the global network.
