About 9 years ago, I worked 94 hour week with yellow cab just to make ends meet for my family. I did so for about 3 years, then I couldn't take it anymore and became a trucker. Where I worked for officially 70 hours a week, though in reality it was much more. I did that for 4 and a half years. Then 2 years ago I lost my job and realized 2 of my 3 children had grown up and I'd missed it. I spent so much time just trying to take care of their needs that I had lost out of being part of their childhood. I realized I couldn't go back to trucking and keep making that same mistake. If I did, I would have missed out on all my children growing up.So there I was, no job, money running out and no real marketable skills to speak of aside from the ability to use my head. You see, I am a gamer, and as such have spent the majority of my life playing games. (Shocker I know). :D. One such game was on online text-based game called Aetolia, it was through this game I found my love for coding. I taught myself my first programming language called LUA. I learned the basics of what a variable was, if statements, recursion, for loops, OOP and even some UI development. I had always dreamed of using my love of electronics in my professional life and so I took a chance and the following month I joined what was then Lamda School (now Bloomtech).While there I learned all the fundamentals of web development: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Node, Express, Relational databases, Python, Data Structures & Algorithms, Git & Github, JQuery, as well as followed Agile methodologies the entire time. I graduated from there in August of 2021, and have had a few mostly unpaid internships since then. But honestly, as I've been mostly unpaid since December 2020, I'm really looking for a paid position, but the most important thing is to be part of a team. I have never enjoyed working professionally on web development more than when I worked as part of a real team on an internship at the end of my coding bootcamp experience.
