Profile bio

About Daniel Browning

I’m a Bundjalung and Kullilli journalist and broadcaster currently presenting The Art Show on ABC RN. As Editor Indigenous Radio, I manage the longstanding flagship programs Awaye! and Speaking Out. I joined the ABC in 1994 after completing a BA (Visual Art) at QUT. After my cadetship I went to work in the Triple J newsroom in Sydney andI read my first national bulletin in 1996. Until 2005 I was Triple J news director and led a small team of young(er) journalists. I presented RN’s Indigenous art and culture program, Awaye!, for 16 years from 2005 to 2021 - more than half its life! My journalism is relational and deeply entrenched in Indigenous sociality. I focus on the issues I personally care about. I’m a widely-published freelance writer on the arts and culture and in 2010 was the inaugural editor of Artlink Indigenous, a specialist issue of the contemporary art journal. I curate deep listening experiences which amplify the voices of First Nations artists for Blak Box, an award-winning sound pavilion designed by architect Kevin O’Brien and commissioned by Utp. I have curated five sound works for Blak Box: humechochorus (2018, Barangaroo); Four Winds (2019, Blacktown); Momentum (2019, Barangaroo) Seasons (2020, 2021, Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne). and the ground-breaking PRECARITIES (2022, The Cutaway, Barangaroo) a hybrid of live and recorded sound. In 2021 I was named QUT’s Outstanding Indigenous Alumnus. In 2023 I was selected as the inaugural recipient of the galang First Nations Residency, a partnership between the Cite internationale des arts in Paris and the Powerhouse Parramatta and undertook three months study into the lives of two Aboriginal men who went to Europe in the nineteenth century and never returned, both of whom I have spent years researching from Australia. Published in 2023 by Magabala, my first book, Close to the Subject, features my collected writing since 2007 and ranges across journalism, art criticism, memoir, poetry and playwriting. The collection also includes some of my best-known work for the ABC, including transcripts of the award-winning radio documentaries 'Fernando's ghost' (2007) and 'Cast among strangers' (2011), both of which closely inform my forthcoming second book. 'Parallel Lives' crosses literary non-fiction with historiography and memoir. I currently hold two Board memberships: Sharing Stories Foundation and the Byron Bay Writers Festival. I live and work on Arakwal country on the far north coast of New South Wales but grew up on my paternal Bundjalung country further north.

Listed skills include Editing, Performing Arts, Theatre, Acting, and 13 others.
