I worked for the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and was responsible for developing detailed plans, goals, and objectives for the long-range implementation and administration of an over-arching marine spatial management planning framework. Duties involved providing professional advice around provincial strategies; providing planning advisory services to the department; recommending appropriate planning methods and marine or land use for project development; preparing detailed site analysis and implementation recommendations for coastal land use; long range planning for future marine-coastal development; and special planning research studies.The work called for a high degree of independent judgement and initiative and the ability to develop concepts and communicate effectively with industry, government and the community. The position also required specialized and complex professional GIS work, involving consultation, and program planning. I represented the division, project, or team in external discussions relating to data collection, acquisition, analysis, and policy development. Key Responsibilities included: GIS Program & Project Development, Marine and Coastal Land Use Planning, and Advisor on issues related to marine-coastal planning and geospatial data.

I worked for both the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture in the Marine and Coastal Services Division and the Department of Agriculture in the Lands Protection Branch, with an office at GeoNova in Halifax.My role was to develop a prioritization and integration strategy for all provincial coastal related spatial data that was dispersed throughout various departments. This included analysis of existing GIS resources, identification of data gaps, creation of a priority rank and deciding on possible applications. The end goal was to enhance decision-making around coastal spatial planning and management in Nova Scotia.
