“Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.”-Malcolm Forbes In today’s modern age with technological advances, the opportunity to learn is seemingly everywhere. While you can pick up pieces of knowledge by chance and through experience, you ingest the most when you are dedicated and aware of learning. All throughout my educational history I have always wondered where I would fit best, and where I could have the most impact on any of the masses that I decided to be in front of. I have always been greatly influenced and inspired by a lot of the past educators that I have had. I've seen how different people in the education system have certain influences in their institutions. Throughout my adolescence, I have looked up to a lot of my teachers and they have had a lot of influence over my decision to be a part of the education system. I knew I wanted to be a leader that someone could look up to and trust, I wanted to make some sort of difference in students' lives, I just didn't know exactly where I would be the most effective. With my recent experience with Volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club and being a substitute teacher at Sunnyside School District I think my place is in the classroom.I am so thankful to have the opportunity to work with adolescents in two different communities, one pertaining to school and the other an after school program that gives me the opportunity to work in two different settings. I have really enjoyed being in the classroom and volunteering at the Club, it has given me two different perspectives and its something that I really needed. Throughout my short time of being a substitute teacher at Sunnyside I have been able to connect to alot of students and surprisingly enough they have used me as a resource. I get asked alot of questions about my major, managing work and school, being an adult, and just about college in general. I have been able to help students with FAFSA, Scholarships, and applying to Universities. I have seen a glimpse on how teachers construct lesson plans and classroom culture, and I plan on mirroring certain aspects of that. The Boys and Girls Club has allowed me to work with a lot of underprivileged children that are so bright and motivated. A Lot of these children have come to me to help with homework and it has been a pleasure of mine to take on that role.
