About Daniel Carlin

Daniel Carlin; Retired Professor, Former Vice Dean & Director of University of Southern California's Screen Scoring program; Emmy-winning music editor; Emmy-nominated music director; music supervisor; conductor; and/or soundtrack producer on nearly 200 film & television projects. His greatest hits include DAYS OF HEAVEN, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, THE BLACK STALLION, STEEL MAGNOLIAS, COMING TO AMERICA, SISTER ACT, THE BODYGUARD, & THE TEMPTATIONS (mini-series). Dan served in Air Force intelligence and subsequently passed his Ph.D. exams in anthropology before helping his father create and run Segue Music, the industry’s largest provider of on-set and post-production music services in Hollywood history. He subsequently served 25 years as Segue's CEO, during which time he collaborated with filmmakers Francis Coppola, John Hughes, Terrence Malick, Harold Ramis, Michael Mann, and Herbert Ross; composers Georges Delerue, Ennio Morricone, Alan Silvestri, Maurice Jarre, David Foster, Trevor Jones, Basil Poledouris, Danny Elfman, Lalo Schifrin, Jerry Fielding, Bruce Broughton, Paul Chihara, Patrick Williams, and Hans Zimmer; and actor/performers Tony Bennett, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Smokey Robinson, Queen Latifah, Usher, Lionel Ritchie, Andrea Bocelli, Barry Manilow, Whoopi Goldberg, Bette Midler, Lawrence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, Bruce Willis, and Steve Martin. He also provided musicology services for Walt Disney Theatrical Productions on their Tony-winning musicals THE LION KING, MARY POPPINS, and NEWSIES.A frequent lecturer, panelist, jurist, concert producer, and event host, Dan has appeared at universities, conservatories, institutes, and concert halls in North America, Asia, and Europe. He taught part-time at UConn, Belmont, and UCLA before transitioning into full-time music education in 2004 as Executive Director of the Henry Mancini Institute. From 2007 to 2012, he served as Chair of Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music before moving to USC as Director of Screen Scoring, where he also served 2 years as Vice Dean overseeing the Contemporary Music Division. Dan co-founded the film-composer programs at UCLA and the Sundance Institute, served 25 years on the Motion Picture Academy’s Music Branch Executive Committee, and was elected twice as Chair of the NARAS Board of Trustees (the GRAMMYs). In 2013, he co-founded the education and recording program at the annual Krakow International Film Music Festival, which he oversaw for 5 summers, and where the mayor of Krakow presented him with the festival's Ambassador Award.
