The BioExpert network operates in association with Capital Cell, Europe’s first equity crowdfunding platform specialised in life sciences with bases in London and Barcelona. As a life sciences expert, I review projects from companies that seek funding for further development. Each company receives a score based on the evaluations from multiple members with various backgrounds (scientific, entrepeneurial, commercial) which allows selection of projects with the greatest potential for success and aids investors in their decision-making process. Additionally, pitching teams are given full access to the expert feedback so that they can improve their projects and raise the desired capital.

At the British Heart Foundation, I help advance cutting edge research in cardiovascular science at the international level. The increasing international positioning of the BHF aims to leverage the UK’s strong academic cardiovascular research base to accelerate breakthrough discoveries and achieve greater impact toward a future free from cardiovascular disease, the single major cause of premature death worldwide, and growing at an alarming rate in lower-middle-income countries. In addition to leading on scientific aspects of a successful international joint funding scheme – currently involving the German Centre for Cardiovascular research, DZHK, and the Dutch Heart Foundation , DHF – I work on the development of the new Global Cardiovascular Research Funders Forum, and act as the interface between the BHF and the international consortium of researchers funded through the pioneering Big Beat Challenge scheme.

As a Programme Manager within the Population & Systems Medicine Board, I developed operational and strategic activities pertaining to the following areas of knowledge: microbiome, rare diseases, inflammation, dermatology, dentistry, the effect of inequalities on health, and the influence of social and behavioural factors on health. I was also responsible for following the progress and coordinating the quinquennial review process of two MRC-funded university units: the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit at the University of Glasgow and the MRC Clinical Trials Unit at University College London.

- Conducting research in the laboratory of Dr Christopher Sibley (www.sibleylab.com) in the Division of Brain Sciences, Department of Medicine, financed by the Motor Neurone Disease Association.- Investigating gene expression patterns, noncoding RNA populations, and RNA-protein interactions in the context of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) with the aim of further understanding the molecular underpinnings of the disease and to identify medically-relevant biomarkers to track and predict disease onset.- Using state-of-the-art functional genomics methods and data analysis based on Next Generation Sequencing.- Developing and optimising experimental methods for the analysis of biologically-occurring RNA-protein interactions at a genome wide level. - Involved in collaborations with other research groups at Imperial College London and the Francis Crick Institute.

Innovation Forum (inno-forum.org) is a growing international network of scientist-entrepeneurs that aims to bridge the gap between scientific ideas and their development into innovative products and services. This is achieved through a series of activities that educate individuals about the road to commercialisation and connects them to the right investors and industry leaders. In this voluntary role I integrate the team that determines and coordinates all the activities of the UCL branch of the organisation, which include lectures, workshops, conferences and competitions. I assist the team in all required tasks including marketing, networking, and all aspects related to the organisation of events. All team members embrace the role of ambassadors of Innovation Forum and strive to disseminate and expand the network and its mission.Currently I am serving in the administrative team for the organisation of the 2018/19 edition of 'IMAGINE IF!', a global accelerator programme for healthcare science ventures (http://inno-forum.org/accelerator/).

- Developed projects in the laboratory of Professor Craig Mello, 2006 Nobel Laureate in Medicine or Physiology for co-discovery of RNA interference, a conserved pathway for regulation of gene expression and nucleic-acid-based immunity (e.g. against viruses) through molecules known as small noncoding RNAs.- Gained wide expertise in the field of noncoding RNA biology – an intense area of current research with therapeutic repercussions – using the model organism C. elegans and human cells. - Discovered biological functions for a poorly understood enzyme by implicating it in the production of small RNAs required for anti-viral immunity and regulation of sperm development through the use of genetic, cell-biological, and advanced proteomic and genomic approaches. - Initiated and managed multiple collaborations with in-house and external groups and guided students and staff in the laboratory.- Presented findings at eight international conferences, including two plenary session talks selected by the organizing committees at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel.- Delivered eight talks at local data clubs, including the Worcester Area Worm Meeting, the UMass RNA Data Club, and the Boston Area Worm Meeting, hosted at MIT.- Created and co-organized the 1st Portuguese Meeting of C. elegans Researchers, December 21, 2007, University of Lisbon, Faculty of Sciences, consisting of a day of talks on multiple research topics and a keynote address by Professor Michael Hengartner (current president of the University of Zurich) to the Lisbon area academic community. - Co-authored six peer-reviewed publications in high-impact scientific journals.
