I analyze and develop methods for single-cell RNA seq-data. Single-cell RNA-seq technology lets us observe gene expression at the level of an individual cell, giving biologists unprecedented ability to understand the roles of different cell-types and how cell-types are produced by the body.Single-cell RNA-seq analysis is challenging because of high levels of noise and high rates of zeroes. I have developed a variant of random forests to fit gene regulatory networks that accounts for high rates of zeroes, and leads to more biologically relevant results.

I used R and Winbugs to carry out meta-analyses for clients at pharmaceutical companies. This includes fitting fixed/random effects models, and Bayesian network meta-analysis models.We generated graphs and slide decks on hard deadlines. I developed code to automatically generate specialized graphs and slide decks using tools such as ggplot2, knitr, and R shiny.Clients wanted to assess our data analytics capabilities by giving us a complex meta-analysis project with survival-outcome data. As part of a team, I helped curate the data set and carried out the analysis.

With Dr. Christina Ramirez, I investigated the problem of how it is that a small subset of HIV positive patients are able to control HIV without being on anti-retrovirals. We developed a method called fuzzy forests, and used to analyze highly correlated flow cytometry data that had been gathered to address this question.Despite cross-validation's ubiquity, theoretical analysis of cross-validation can be quite challenging and context-dependent. With Dr. Gang Li, I proved that cross-validation achieves an optimality property in the context of the classical multivariate Nadaraya-Watson smoother.
