Senior Reporter

Current

New York, Ny, Us

First-place winner of a national large-division SABEW business journalism award for Law360's investigation of troubled debt relief law firm Litigation Practice Group. Produced features and analyses for Law360's Small Law newsletter, writing stories for and about attorneys in law firms with 20 lawyers or fewer. It sounds small, but it's a huge subject - the overwhelming majority of lawyers in the United States work in small or solo firms, and they handle some of the most important cases in our legal system. I also contribute to "Access to Justice," Law360's newsletter covering legal issues impacting low-income and marginalized people.

In 2019, I wrote an article that led to a state-level investigation and reprimand of a judge, as well as another article that led to resignation of a city prosecutor less than 24 hours after publication. I also broke a story on a racial controversy within a school that set a record among all Gannett organizations for subscriptions generated from a single article. In 2020, I covered upheaval including local details of COVID-19 testing, street protests and impact of the virus on the local Hispanic population. In 2021, I wrote an in-depth feature on a false homicide confession that later won first place in an 11-state southeastern journalism contest, SPJ's Green Eyeshade Awards. City Hall Reporter

Memphis, Tn, Us

I returned from a year-long book leave and became the only Memphis news reporter stationed full-time at City Hall. I wrote breaking news and enterprise stories during a bitter and protracted budget dispute. It all started when the mayor proposed stabilizing city finances by cutting employee and retiree benefits. That angered leaders of municipal labor unions, and their members packed City Council meetings, gave passionate speeches at the microphone and protested outside the building. Hundreds of police and fire employees registered their fury by calling in sick. The battle dragged on for months, and I maintained good relationships with all sides and explained the complex financial and political moves to the public.
