About Daniel Cullen
Starting in college I began working as a mechanical engineer at GE Transportation, working on locomotive design and validation. Upon completion of my undergraduate education I secured a position in GE's Edison Engineering Development Program (EEDP), which is targeted at developing technical and leadership skills in young professionals. Through EEDP I worked in four six month rotations throughout the transportation business, developing a comprehensive understanding of the locomotive system as a whole, while developing expertise in detailed design areas. During the program I enrolled in technical coursework through GE taught by GE employees and consultants, and targeted at bridging the gap between theoretical analysis and real world engineering design.After completion of EEDP rotations, I took a full time position in the engine cooling group, where I started out working on field reliability issues. After successful completion of component level design projects I began working on system level design and validation. I begin working on the development of the vaporizer heating system for the new dual fuel locomotive, and have since begun working on the engine cooling system design for a new international lightweight locomotive platform.

Developed, monitored, and ran engine system and engine component tests on the Tier 4 development engine. Worked with the component design engineers and the engine program managers to develop the test plans, allocate resources, and schedule test duration and completion. Worked with the engine lab personal to schedule engine and component tear downs, and to provide instruction and assistance during the tear down and rebuild process. Wrote change orders for radiator cab drawings to improve manufacturing ease or modify system design.Worked with suppliers and manufacturing to incorporate late cooling system design changes into the pre-production units being built for the T4 NPI locomotives. Provided drawing modifications and HW to manufacturing for the cut in of late design changes throughout the build process.Designed a flow control valve into the T4 locomotive water cooling circuit to address system design issues, which arose during preliminary testing. The valve allows the cooling system to meet its functional requirements at low pump speeds while having a limited impact on system performance at high engine speeds. Lead design reviews to cover requirements, concepts, and detailed design of the valve and pneumatic actuator. Wrote a detailed purchase specification for the valve assembly to be distributed to valve suppliers as an RFQ. Performed a detailed failure mode effects analysis for the assembly and wrote a validation matrix and test plan designed to measure and mitigate the risk of any failures deemed a potential high risk.
Eedp - Engine Control Engineer
Using the Simulink suite in Matlab created and edited engine control logic used on GE locomotives. Tuned the PI regulator gains used to control engine speed on an NPI locomotive made for Indonesia. Worked to validate and review all control logic written for the Indonesia locomotive and lead design reviews based on logic addition and validation.Modified logic in the engine control and engine management models to allow what was previously a 6000 HP locomotive to operate at 4500 HP for fuel savings. Worked to review requirements, concepts, and detailed design for the model changes and additions to support the new application.
