What I have learned from 18 years in the remodeling industry.The better part of my career has been spent in the remodeling industry. More specifically the companies I have worked for have focused on the aging condominium communities across the northeast. Focusing on the exterior remodeling of aging condo units that were originally constructed in the 1970's-1980's, I have unintentionally taken a master class in estimating, budgeting, employee management, customer management, personal management, carpentry, painting, negotiating, contract writing and business development. The following is a list of the most important things I've learned.Communication: Whether its direct employees, managers, customers, co workers or work associates communication is key. Effectively communicating a job to your employees, customers and associates stays ahead of a lot of issues. In the end, everyone wants to feel like there is an adult in the room that can formulate a plan. This may need to be done several times in the course of any project. But timely effective communication is the key to making it all run smoothly.Cooperation: Cooperating with everyone you work with is essential. Our ego can be our worst enemy. Many times we are presented with doing it the customers way or not doing it at all. Even with employees, its essential to hear what they have to say. They are on the frontlines and will tell you if. something won't work. Listen and cooperate. Managing Expectations: Your employees, your clients and most importantly your own. This can be the hard part. Saying no. But sometimes a square peg doesn't fit in a round hole no matter how much anyone wants to will it to happen. It's vitally important to keep checking all expectations and bring everyone back to a place of reason. In the end, you're the manager. If the project fails it's a result of someone not stepping in and making hard decisions. Yes, it may have been someone else's fault, but as the manager you're in the wrong for not correcting that. Have fun: A mentor once said no one will listen to you if they don't like you. This can be serious business but it's important to remember you are dealing with human beings, who, like you, are imperfect. Having a sense of humor, keeping it light, engaging people in topics other than work while at work creates trust and an environment where people feel comfortable. When people are comfortable they're less likely to react and more likely to cooperate and communicate effectively.
