Based within the Department for Leadership and Command, I lead a large research and development project on leadership and command funded by the Swedish Armed Forces. Areas of focus include:- Effectiveness of military officer training- Motivations amongst those in leadership positions within the Armed Forces.- Recruitment and retention of military officers and non-commissioned officers.- Recruitment and retention of military conscripts. Other areas of research interest include:- Motivations of individuals to become foreign fighters. - Civil-military relations within societies which have compulsory military service - National models of Total Defence- Crisis management and response

Lead for all research, analysis, monitoring and evaluation at the British High Commission in Tanzania. - Provided analytical support to the embassy’s Senior Leadership Team to inform strategic decision-making.- Represented the UK at high level meetings and events with development partners (e.g. UN, World Bank, IMF), Tanzanian ministers and senior officials.- Designated crisis team leader. During COVID-19 crisis, held responsibility for embassy operating procedures and organised emergency evacuation flights. - Chair of the Mission Impact Board to monitor and evaluate the strategic efforts of the mission in achieving its diplomatic, security and development outcomes.- Conducted robust monitoring and evaluations of UK development programmes, including anti-corruption, counter-extremism and security programmes. - Represented UK at high level meetings and events with the Tanzanian government and other countries’ governments.

Established, developed and operated a Research and Evidence Hub to support policy teams and DfID in-country offices within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in using research and evidence.Main duties:- Recruited, built and led team of researchers to deliver high quality research and analysis for UK embassies across the Middle East and North Africa region - Supported embassies to identify and analyse key problems then devise solutions. - Oversaw and delivered briefings and submissions to ministers on high profile, complex and rapidly changing issues in the MENA region.- Liaised and collaborated with institutions active in the region, inc. universities, think tanks, NGOs and other government departments and agencies (UK and foreign). Key projects and achievements: 1) Managed and delivered rapid research projects on key Middle East issues, inc. counter-terrorism in Jordan, Iraq and Syria. 2) Delivered regular training sessions and workshops to embassies to assist their developing of policy and practice decision-making.

Temporary posting to British High Commission in Kigali, Rwanda to provide analytical, monitoring and evaluation support to the embassy.- Conducted review and audit of UK aid programme delivered through the Government of Rwanda to assess the programme’s performance.- Provided support to teams on results monitoring and reporting, as well as in designing and conducting evaluations

Led small team of researchers in producing high quality evaluations, research and analysis in priority areas of policing, using a wide range of research methods.- Delivered lectures, seminars and training sessions to senior police officers and staff.- Drafted technical research reports for peer-reviewed publication and presentation at professional and academic conferences.Key projects: Evaluation of a new police training programme, involving both impact and process evaluation, resulting in improved police training and two peer-reviewed publications.

Government Social Research Officer at the Ministry of Justice on the Civil Service Fast Stream. Based in the Human Rights, Law and International Analysis Team, I conducted research and analysis into priority government areas of law, rights and international justice.Key projects included:- Rapid Evidence Assessment of the needs of UK military veterans in prison, in support of an independent parliamentary review.- Qualitative research on foreign national offenders in prison.- Comparative study of the England and Wales justice system and other Council of Europe justice systems.
