Scientific research is an incredibly exciting career that allows us to not only answer questions that haven’t been answered before, but also to make meaningful contributions that improve our community. A career in research has been a perfect fit for me, because of my love for problem-solving. The more challenging the problem, the greater sense of satisfaction I get from solving it, however the greatest feeling of all is being able to then teach others how I came to a solution.My career has been defined by constantly adapting to change. I’ve been fortunate to keep finding exciting new challenges, having started with agricultural research and transitioning on to embryo development, brain injury repair, and computational analysis. Throughout my career I have sought and implemented cutting-edge technologies to enhance and improve the type of research outcomes I’ve been able to achieve. I have twice been in laboratories that have relocated at times that it wasn’t practical for me to relocate with the lab. In those situations, I had to adapt from working in a team environment to working completely independently. This is what has allowed me to develop into the independent and self-driven researcher that I am today. In pursuing my career goals, me and my family have had the opportunity to have a home all across Canada. While relocating and being away from friends and family can be difficult, we’ve had the chance to experience many great things and meet so many wonderful people along the way. The ability to work remotely has been great because it allows me to better manage my time and have a better work-life balance. Even simply removing my commute time has given me more time with my family, which is absolutely invaluable to me.
