I prepare permit applications and manage permitted coal surface/underground mining permits. This includes the creating of geological, hydrological and application maps and writing narratives addressing all aspects of the permit application process. I support the permitting, engineering and safety departments in geologic considerations. This includes drilling for, collecting, preparing and evaluating the results of acid-base and slake durability samples. I manage outside consultants responsible for permit applications/revisions. I conduct environmental audits to ensure compliance with state and federal agencies. I evaluate proposed gas wells to determine compatibility with deep mine planning and suitability of electrical logging for reserve evaluation. I annually draft and calculate acreage of surface disturbance for lease payments.

I investigated geologic conditions at mine sites to develop/modify mining strategies. I evaluated potential mine reserve blocks and developed new mine reserves. This included managing, planning and executing the exploration of potential and identified mine reserves. This duty also included the interpreting of electrical logs of drill holes, logging core holes, and doing detailed descriptions of coal and interburden. I created isopach mapping of the coal properties and quality characteristics as well as mapping of geologic conditions. I maintained the geologic database, Coal Access. I worked with the land department in determining drill site ownership and access.

I cooperated with the Virginia Department of Mined Land Reclamation (DMLR) to insure compliance with state regulations and adherence to permit guidelines. In accordance with state requirements I coordinated and conducted quarterly refuse fill certifications for all Virginia permits held by the company. As part of our reclamation program, I coordinated the planting of trees on permits to meet the post mine land usage.

I was responsible for mapping surface and underground mining operations. I prepared mine maps for certification and submission to state and federal agencies, including ventilation, pillar design, and roof bolting plan maps. I drafted geologic conditions encountered by the mining operations. I calculated the percentage of less than/greater than 36 inches total coal for tax credit. In performing these duties I regularly made use of AutoCAD Map 3D, Carlson Software, and Microsoft Office Suite.

I coordinated the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) sample collection to ensure compliance with Virginia regulations under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA). I collected samples, measured flow rates, and performed field analyses on NPDES sample points. These tasks were performed in accordance with specific protocols according to ASTM standards. I entered the collected data into the computer and generated reports. I assisted in the development/amendment of coal mining permit applications by composing the geologic and hydrological portions of the application. I also conducted water supply inventories and baseline sampling for permit applications. As part of Virginia's Department of Mines Minerals and Energy's and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' ecosystem restoration efforts on the North Fork of the Powell River, I assisted in the locating of potential point source discharges of acid mine drainage. Once the point sources were located; I constructed weirs and established and surveyed stream cross sections. I also installed gauging stations with data logging pressure transducers. I was then tasked with measuring flow rates, collecting samples, and performing field analysis for the point sources as well as downloading the data from the pressure transducers. To accomplish these tasks I made use of LabWorks, Lotus 1-2-3, and Microsoft Office Suite. I calibrated and used pH meters, conductivity meters, and dissolved oxygen meters to collect data in the field. I made use of both a Price AA and Pygmy flow meter in conjunction with an AquaCalc data logger. I employed a submersible pump to purge ground water wells.
