If I had to pick one attribute that defines me as a a person, it would be my high level of organisation that allows me to work effectively at any task at hand to the best of my capabilities. Growing up as a young child surrounded by a sea of technology was always a struggle to develop a sense of organisation. I was rather a disorganised and ‘all-over-the-shop’ type of person that didn’t perceive the concept of organisation as ‘important’ or ‘necessary’ in achieving one’s passion or purpose. It was only until early this year at the beginning of my year 12 journey when I realised something needed to be changed if I really wanted to get my life in order. That something was starting to implement the concept of organisation into my life. You might ask what exactly did I do to gain that sense of self-sufficiency and responsibility through developing organisation. Well, firstly I picked up a journal and began to write down what I wanted to achieve and what I wanted to improve on as a person. Obviously, ‘becoming more organised’ was a prominent feature of my listed goals and so I continued to go forth with my ambitions and then start making my bed every day. Of course the early phase of making this work was always a difficulty at first, but I kept persisting through constant failure and funnily enough began to unconsciously make my bed every morning. Now I can finally say I feel refreshed and ready to give everyday my 100% because of this practice of making the bed every morning. You might be wondering how can making your bed have such an impact on one’s quality of life, and the truth is when you perform this exercise, you are mastering the skill of willpower, which is what I like to describe as ‘finishing what you started’. So every time I make my bed, I am starting my day off on a productive, refreshed and orderly manner in which I carry these attributes throughout the rest of my respective days. How so? After making my bed, I will take a cold shower, meditate, journal my thoughts as mentioned, always make an effort to complete house chores, always be kind to others, always be willing to give others time to speak, perform daily exercise and simply just give every task my best shot. Ultimately when you tie these things together, you create a highly organised person, which in this case it’s me and so it can be for you as well. That’s why I recommend you to always make or at least try to make your bed each and every morning, because although it may seem like a ‘tedious’ practice to do, I can guarantee it will have a huge impact on your life.
