As the Senior Manager 2, I maintain the Organic Lab functions for the DNR EPD lab. Currently there are 4 supervisors and 15 Scientists under my direct supervision. We in the Organic lab test samples ranging from air, drinking water, and hazardous waste. All of our drinking water methodology falls under the EPA's 500 series. Our hazardous waste samples are covered by SW846-8081 and 8082 in soil and water. Lastly we also perform the NATTS study for TO-11's in ambient air samples.

-Supervise the Synthetic Organic Compounds (SOC) group of analyses. -Supervise 3-4 scientists covering EPA methods 504.1, 515.1, 515.4, 531.1, 531.2, 547, 548.1, 549.2, and 550.1.-Review data compiled by the scientists for the above mentioned methods. -Validate sample data-Replaced EPA method 515.1 to EPA method 515.4. -Replaced EPA method 531.1 with EPA method 531.2.-Conduct quarterly method audits within the Organic laboratory-Create excel spreadsheets for simpler calculations-Wrote 1 new SOP for each of the seven methods above -Control charted data every six months-Created new progress report to validate sample data.-Maintain approximately 2 million dollars in instrumentation full time along with Supervisor duties. Instrumentation includes but not limited to Perkin Elmer High Performance Liquid Chromatographs (HPLC) with Pickering Pinnacle post column derivatization modules, Perkin Elmer Gas Chromatographs(GC), Sox therms, TurboVaps, RapidVaps, J2 Gel Permeation Chromatopraph (GPC), and Millipore Milli-Q A-10 water purification system. -Biannually, I write Performance Evaluations for my employees.-Reduced Methylene Chloride use within the lab by 50% and Ethyl Ether use by almost 100% by the institution of 515.4.-Total yearly savings for the lab per year by the institution of 515.4 is approximately $30,000.

As a Scientist III, I maintained a certification in all the analyses listed below under Scientist II. With the knowledge gained from my previous positions I was able to work toward more of a Team Leader position under the Supervisor. All the other analysts that work within the SOC group used me as a resource of knowledge to troubleshoot their analyses. A Scientist III, I was also asked to write and the edit several of our SOP's. I also corrected problems under the 548.1 extraction method. Our SOP's did not follow the method directly, it was my responsibility to do a study in order to get our extraction method closer to the EPA's extraction method. During this time the Laboratory moved locations. While the new Lab was in the planning phase I was able to give my input on the direction for the Organic Laboratory setup.

As a Scientist II my primary focus evolved from THM's and HAA's to a new group of analyses. The new analyses in which became my primary focus were EPA method 504.1 and EPA method 548.1. Over the two years as a Scientist II I also focused on other Synthetic Organic Carbon (SOC's) methods. I also extracted and analyzed EPA methods 508.1(PCB's, Chlordane, Toxaphene) 515.1, 531.1, 547, 549.2, TO-11A, and TO-13A. I also maintained and apprenticeship under our instrument technician.

As a Scientist I, my primary focus was to extract EPA method 551.1 samples which specialized in the analysis of Tri-Halomethanes (THM's). My Secondary analytical method was EPA method 552.2 which specialized in the analysis of Halo-Acetic Acids (HAA's). Both methods were analyzed on a Perkin Elmer Gas Chromatographic (GC) instrument. My tertiary focus was to apprentice under our Instrument Technician. Under his guidance this allowed for a greater understanding of the trouble shooting of most Perkin Elmer instrumentation, being that a GC or an High Performance Liquid Chromatographic (HPLC) instrument.
