Advisor
Postdoctoral Scientist
Graduate Student Researcher
PhD in Organic Chemistry within the Sletten Lab at UCLA. My work focused on developing nanoemulsions that encapsulate (transiently) fluorous-soluble payloads, including drugs, dyes, and pDNA until release is triggered by intracellular stimuli (e.g., reducing agents, protein concentrations). I synthesized custom poly(2-oxazoline) surfactants to address unmet needs in the bench-top stability, surface functionalization, and responsive capabilities of perfluorocarbon-in-water nanoemulsions in vitro. We then take these materials and study property-dependent nanomaterial cellular uptake, localization, and payload release. Through this, I have developed a novel methodology in which polymeric materials can respond to protein concentrations. Additionally, I have collaborated with labs at UCLA and UCSB and have mentored two students now pursuing doctoral degrees.
R&D Intern
Worked in the Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (PSA) and Release Materials division of the Corporate Research Materials Laboratory, developing latex formulations that enhance PSA end-use performance by decoupling material properties (e.g. peel/tack strength, shear resistance, etc.). Systematically established structure-property relationships and best in case attributes. Learned basic knowledge of PSA properties and standard characterization techniques.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Worked within Professor Thai Thayumanavan's delivery subgroup towards the formation of stimuli-responsive lipogels for the dual encapsulation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic small molecule therapeutics, whose wide range of applications will include both intracellular and oral delivery. Additionally, used a known design scheme for the creation of polymeric nanogels to investigate the relationship between the encapsulation stability of the delivery vehicle and the hydrophobicity of the encapsulated molecule, while using this relationship to develop a system for the efficient tuning of these vehicles’ leakage dynamics.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
REU student in the Material Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) summer program within Professor Marcus Weck's anistropic colloid subgroup. Worked towards developing colloids that are able to specifically and directionally bond, particularly by investigating hydrophobic coating methods of silica colloids for future use as patchy particles. The ability to assemble colloids into more complex architectures is of significant chemical and industrial interest as they show great potential within fields such as photonics, sensors, catalysis, molecular electronics, and use within drug delivery systems.
Intern
Worked within the Quality Control department of a contract manufacturing organization, routinely performing analytical testing for mid-process and final products along with any raw materials. Testing included use of FTIR, UV-Vis, HPLC, GC-MS and Karl Fischer instruments and methods according to current good manufacturing practices (cGMPs). Assisted in method development and became an on-site trainer for new department employees.
Product Management Intern
Edited and helped manage the Science Reference Center's digital archives database, particularly in regards to image collection. Tagged 10,000's of images by utilizing Excel queries to increase productivity. Wrote numerous articles for the Featured Science Topic section, and created a concise spreadsheet of relevant, fundamental branches of chemistry.
