Reviewed Feed Package Documents for new Refinery planned in Equador. I reviewed and commented on the design of the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit, FCC; Sour water Stripping Unit, SWS; Amine Regeneration Unit, ARU; Boiler Feed Water System, BFW; and Coke Fired Power Plant, CFP.Participated in many refinery studies reducing capital costs and also studies reducing crude rate. These studies continue until the refinery capacity and configuration are set.Learned to use a linear programing software called PetroPlan.

Prepared proposals and assisted with cost estimate bids to obtain refinery work. Did preliminary design work to bid on new refinery in Vietnam; superized 4 process engineers in this work. Also participated in the proposal for a new refinery in Malaysia.Also assisted in some gas projects and upstream well projects.

Led the development of the first issue of P&IDs for the fractionation section of an LNG plant in Africa; supervised 6 process engineers in this work. Accepted an assignment in Moscow Russia for three years to help TNK-BP develop oil fields. Was the study manager for several projects.Assisted in the preliminary design of a deep cut Vacuum Unit while in Moscow. Also assisted in the design of several Diesel Hydrotreater revamps to get to low sulfur diesel.

Texaco – Multiple Locations. Developed process design packages for Texaco’s gasification process; Piping and Instrument drawings, data sheets, etc. Prepared such packages for 2 years.BP – Texas City Relief Valve Study Projects, Texas City, TX. As a Senior Process Engineer, was responsible for project management, project engineering, and process supervision of several relief valve study projects. BP spent one to two million dollars a year on these relief valve studies. These studies required changes in the relief valves and or inlet and outlet lines. I supervised as many as 20 process engineers in this work. This work lasted several years.BP – Grangemouth Refinery Project, Scotland. Assisted Grangemouth Refinery in determining the required changes to FCC unit to make it more reliable. This started out as a 2 week assignment and the client asked me to stay 5 months. Exxon - Baytown, TX. Developed process design packages for Exxon. The Exxon packages were for small refinery projects. Worked with Exxon for one year on such projects.

Responsible for leading major jobs for process engineering design supervision, approval, scheduling, and coordination. Other areas of responsibilities included providing sales support for business development, training, and support for start-up and commissioning. Work included two heavy oil projects in Venezuela involving multiple units, utilities, and a study of generating power versus purchasing power from electrical companies. One Heavy Oil Upgrader was by Conoco. This upgrader mainly used coking and shipped the syscrude to the United States for Conoco to process. The other upgrader was by Total which not only used Coking but also used Hydrocracking to produce a salable syncrude. Both these upgraders were built. Identified a technology used in the food industry for crystallization and assisted in the development of this technology to be used for paraxylene crystallization. Negotiated a contract with the company that owned the technology and assisted in the sale of the first unit.Performed detailed engineering for an FCC revamp in South Africa. This revamp was complicated because the regenerator system was revamped by UOP and the Reactor and downstream equipment was revamped by IFP. I assisted in the start-up of this unit.Performed the detailed engineering for a Vaccum Unit in Lake Charles; supervised 5 process engineers during this effort.Performed detailed engineering for a naphtha Hydrotreater for Unoven in Chicago area; supervised 5 process engineers in this project and found several mistakes in the front end design package that were corrected and saved the client money.

As Senior Project Engineer, was responsible for the design, detailed engineering, equipment selection, and construction of a billion dollar expansion project in St. Croix which included a 90,000 BPSD FCC Unit and several other new units.Reviewed work by detailed engineering contractor and made comments. Also reviewed vendor equipment packages and aided in selecting the most appropreate vendor.

As FCC Section Manager, expanded the group from two to ten process engineers. Responsible for providing technical support in FCC marketing, assisting in developing market strategies, developing and improving the technology, preparing proposals, supervising designs and studies of specific jobs, providing technical support to start-ups, and assisting in troubleshooting and technical service problems of clients. Assisted with developing FCC technology. Involved in the design of several new units and several revamps. Assisted in the start-up of Caltex FCC Unit revamp in Australia.Initiated and supervised several development programs. Provided supervision for studies and the process design packages for one new FCC unit and four revamps. This job required a considerable marketing effort as well as handling personnel problems in the FCC Section. Supervised as many as 10 process engineers.

Invented a new process called Kel-D and acquired a patent for this technology. Aided in complete development of the new process. Secured company funds to develop the process in the Kellogg lab. Participated in the bench scale unit and pilot plant testing. Analyzed process economics as compared to competitive processes. Performed commercial design from the laboratory data. Designed and sold process demo plant in Chile and participated in its start-up and testing in 1987 and 1988.Assisted in the development of Kellogg’s “Demetalization” process and the “ART” process.Directed the process design, detailed design, and start-up of several refining units. Responsible for the design of at least three new FCC units and six FCC revamps. Participated in the start-up and performance testing of four FCC units, one visbreaker unit, and one Kel-D unit. Other refinery experience included solvent deasphalting units, crude and vacuum units, asphalt residual treating units, alkylation units, delayed coking units, Kel-D units, amine units, sour water strippers, visbreaker units, hydrogen units, hydrocracking units, desulfurizing units, and reformer units.Wrote several design manuals for Kellogg about several different units; one on FCC Unit Design, another on Solvent Deasphalting, another on Sour Water Stripping, and also one on Amine Treating.
