For my master’s project, I tested and wrote a report on the water and energy use, aswell as the effectiveness, of several different cooling systems for California dairy cattle.I assisted with the instrumentation, equipment assembly and installation, datacollection, and data analysis. I led small teams of undergraduate researchers for thecompletion of some installation and data collection tasks. I also provided performancemeasures for each of the pieces of cooling equipment. I used basic engineeringprinciples for the analysis and compiled the results using Python. One of my key accomplishments was that I alone designed and successfullyimplemented a controller for a heater that tracked a temperature to within 0.2°C usingan Arduino and other electronics.

I worked in a team of four to design (using Solidworks and an Arduinomicroprocessor) and manufacture (using machining processes) an automatedmechanical arm. We designed it to track a moving object using an Arduinomicroprocessor programmed with a feedback control algorithm and a CMUcam5PIXY camera for visual detection. We exceeded all expectations and received highmarks by creating a system with tracking that was both fast and accurate, able toreach any point within a 48 cm radius in less than 1 second.

3D Part Designer And Researcher

Oakland, California, Us

I led in the creation and execution of an experiment testing the tensile properties ofvarious 3D printed materials. Using the data, I analyzed the effects of infill geometry, percent infill, and strain rate on the tensile properties. I utilized finite elementanalysis of 3D models in order to enrich the analysis and explain trends. I wrote aproposal and the final report (linked below) with the editing assistance of mysupervisor, Chris McCoy. It was published in the 11th Manufacturing Science andEngineering Conference (MSEC2016). In addition, I had the opportunity to presentmy research at the conference.I also designed 3D objects based on requests from the You3Dit’s users withSolidworks and Inventor. The objects I designed include both engineering parts andartistic items with more complex geometry.
