  • Imrnext
    Director Of Engineering
    Imrnext Jan 2018 - Jun 2022
    Brisbane, Australia
I am the co-founder in IMRnext, a technology-based company in Brisbane, Australia, that pioneered low latency video streaming technology for the wireless VR industry and is now supporting other low latency streaming applications. I co-founded the company 3.5 years ago with the aim to create a CODEC specifically for the low-latency and high-quality demands VR would require. I was CEO of the company for the initial 2.5 years and responsible for growing and managing the team from 2 people to around 25 staff, of which about 18 were a mixture of engineers from FPGA/digital design, software (embedded, microprocessor, etc) and a few hardware (PCB design) engineers. Through this time, I was also the primary author of a number of patents for IMRnext (see below). The role was predominately an executive/VP Engineering position, with my role overseeing all the engineering activities for the company. I actively travelled to USA and Asia, demonstrating IMR’s technology and partnering with some of the biggest technology companies in the world.Currently my focus is on leading the engineering team and working with our commercial team on current and future strategic partnerships for the business and aligning the outputs from the engineering team with our commercial drivers.
  • Imrnext
    Ceo & Co-Founder, Engineering Director
    Imrnext Aug 2015 - Jan 2018
    Brisbane, Australia
IMRnext is a Brisbane based start-up that has developed a technology for compression of Virtual Reality (VR) content for transmission by WiFi or 4G+/5G. The IMRnext technology comprises an algorithm and real time hardware for compression and decompression of the VR video data. A major differentiator of the technology is that our team has been able to dramatically reduce the data transmitted by over 95% with extremely low introduced latencies of less than 1 millisecond, without a noticeable drop in visual clarity or performance. There also is no motion blur or unwanted artefacts introduced, such as with traditional video compression. The PC based VR head mounted displays (HMD) produced by Valve, Oculus Rift, HTC, Sony (and others) use Display Port/HMDI and USB cables to enable the transmission of video and user position between the PC and the HMD, tethering the two together by the length of the cable. This cable tethering is recognised as a restriction to movement and has safety implications. The algorithms also apply to the 5G network Cloud VR which would enable smartphones and HMDs using smartphone chips to stream directly from the cloud content such as sporting events, games shopping etc.The immediate application for the technology is in smartphone chips and for multiplayer VR Arcade gaming. IMR released their product at the Consumer Electronic Show 2017 (CES) to enormous interest from Chip manufactures, HMD OEMs, military, NASA, and VR Arcade owners. The algorithm (compression or decompression) would be included in PCs, HMDs and in other VR capable devices such as phones and 360º cameras. The communication could be PC to headset, 360º camera to headset or PC, peer to peer for shared VR and remote presence over Wi-Fi, enabling applications such as medical inspections, operations and inherently dangerous industrial applications.Visit www.imrnext.com to learn more about what we are doing and latest news releases.

  • Aerial Robotics Group, Autonomous Systems Laboratory, Ict Centre, Csiro
    Research Scientist
Aerial Robotics Group, Autonomous Systems Laboratory, Ict Centre, Csiro 2005 - 2008
Full time employment as a research scientist. The main objective of the project I was involved with was to develop a dependable mini helicopter system for civilian inspection and search tasks close to obstacles. These operations are to be performed by one operator, beyond line of sight, in common airspace and in typical Queensland weather conditions.Typical inspection and search task applications include: Power line inspection; Structural inspection (eg: cooling tower inspection); and Disaster assessment and search of victims.Incorporating dependable autonomous on-board subsystems with suitable perception and control capabilities reduces the number of operators, relaxes the requirements on communication links, and enables to fly safely in common airspace. The CSIRO helicopter system will enable future missions to be more effective and efficient.Duties here involved autonomous hardware and software development for the UAV helicopter, vision tracking algorithms, development of a complete ground operation station, flight testing, flight testing regulations, OH&S policies etc.
