As a Specialty Registrar I am involved in projects across the public health spectrum, including health protection (e.g. screening & outbreak investigations), health improvement (e.g. informing national dietary sugar reduction strategies) and service improvement (e.g. conducting service evaluations and regional audits). I also tutor medical students and have been involved in the organisation and governance of the national public health recruitment process.

Iraq

I was based in Northern Iraq working to identify and address the health needs of the large displaced population who have been forced from their homes by the recent conflict. Managing health promotion teams delivering health education, community engagement activities, service referrals and psychological first aid. Collaborating with other MSF projects and other NGOs in the region. Working in displaced persons camps, urban centres and several towns that were recently liberated from ISIS control.

Conducting audits & service evaluations, role-modelling excellence in clinical care, teaching on a variety of trauma-related subjects, managing the flow and priority of orthopaedic patients undergoing surgery, contributing data to various local and national databases, organising and conducting Trauma Team Member courses, producing patient information leaflets, being available as a source of information and reassurance to patients & relatives on the orthopaedic ward, coordinating the Fractured Neck of Femur pathway (including pre- & post-operative care and discharge planning), and generally working to improve the overall care and hospital experience of people admitted to the Trust with traumatic injuries.

West London

All Senior Staff Nurse roles and responsibilities, plus: Link Nurse for Vulnerable Adults, Link Nurse for Domestic Violence, Link Nurse for Learning Disabilities, Lead Trauma Audit & Research Network (TARN) contributor for the Trust, Member of the hospital Trauma Steering Group, Member of Ealing's Domestic Violence Taskforce, and Shift Leader.

North Darfur, Sudan

Leading a small expatriate medical team working in a health centre serving two large Internally Displaced Persons camps in North Darfur. Responsible for service delivery and evaluation of inpatient/outpatient care, antenatal and midwifery services, vaccination campaigns, nutritional programs and health monitoring for a population of 40,000 in an armed conflict zone. Also undertook medical teaching for local staff, audits of prescribing accuracy, pharmacy management, stock ordering, security assessments and several emergency evacuations.

Assessment and care of emergency department patients, pediatrics, trauma and burns, minor injuries, critical care patient transfers, breaking bad news, child protection and social services referrals. Managing areas of the department (Majors, Resus, Paediatrics), triage, mentorship of students and junior staff, providing training sessions and undertaking internal audits to improve the service. Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) qualified.

Sabah, Malaysian Borneo

Teaching malaria prevention and emergency first aid, on-the-ground management of three adventure and conservation projects, navigation, jungle survival, camp organization, river crossings, conflict resolution, first aid, and coordinating casualty evacuations.
